A soulful retelling of a classic Greek tragedy is one of the latest additions to the West End and is a must-see for all.<\/p>\n

Hadestown<\/a> is the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice, torn apart by Hades.<\/p>\n

It hit Broadway in 2016 and made its West End debut in 2024. And while new productions in that part of town may come and go, this felt like one that was here to stay and become one of the classics of the London theatre scene.<\/p>\n

The music, inspired by a Depression-era New Orleans, feels like something new and exciting at the Lyric Theatre, and means the musicians play a big and important role in the production.<\/p>\n

Having listened to the Broadway album on repeat over the last few months, I had an idea of what to expect from each character but, thankfully, I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n

Orpheus, played by the adorable Marley Fenton, had the ability to shift from the sweet, gentle melodies of Epic with just him and the guitar to the powerful Wait for Me. He has excellent comedic timing and was heartbreaking when he needed to be.<\/p>\n

The main narrator, Hermes, played by Clive Rowe, was equally versatile. He carried the story and felt like a friend to the audience, guiding them through the story with a song and a dance. You could hear a pin drop in his final number.<\/p>\n

Rachel Adedeji is a household name for her former talent show stint, but she should be known for her stage presence and captivating voice.<\/p>\n

Playing Persephone, she was a perfect soft edge to match Hades’ prickly, evil persona, played by Alastair Parker.<\/p>\n

The use of the complex stage set-up made it clear that the character, although not front and centre, was omnipresent and omniscient. He was an excellent villain and commanded the stage whenever he made it down.<\/p>\n

Speaking of the stage, the design is so impressive, with a central platform that moves up and down and a rotating floor, and it was cleverly used to help move the storyline along.<\/p>\n

The speed at which it was used and the choreography of the performers around it all played an important part in the narration and made the stage feel bigger than it was.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a musical that makes you laugh and cry, with a more modern feel to it, then this is the one for you, and I for one hope it\u2019s here for many more years to come.<\/p>\n
