{"id":943147,"date":"2026-05-07T05:42:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T05:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/943147\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T05:42:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T05:42:34","slug":"northern-ireland-health-service-got-81m-last-year-from-a-charge-on-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/943147\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland health service got \u00a381m last year from a charge on immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Northern Ireland\u2019s health service received more than \u00a381m last year from a tax on immigrants using the NHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/healthcare-immigration-application\/who-needs-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/healthcare-immigration-application\/who-needs-pay\">The Immigration Health Surcharge<\/a> is a mandatory upfront payment towards the NHS for most people applying for a visa in the UK, now costing \u00a31,035 a year for adults. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Exceptions include certain health care workers, asylum seekers and those applying for indefinite leave to enter or remain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Figures revealed in an Assembly Question to the Health Minister Mike Nesbitt by DUP MLA Diane Forsythe showed the department has received more than \u00a3239m from the tax in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/300000-award-for-couple-at-centre-of-tattle-life-case-set-aside-by-judge-LZ5PF3TYCJEIFAY7KQFJRGVAV4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"&#xA3;300,000 award for couple at centre of Tattle Life case &#x2018;set aside&#x2019; by judge\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778132552_239_OC5YWOPUXZF7DAI7VJ5ZCSGUFM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/noah-donohoe-inquest-live-latest-updates-as-week-six-proceedings-begin-EYX5ZWOAFVDWDA5JCOI6D2UDV4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Noah Donohoe inquest: Lead PSNI search adviser was &#x2018;convinced&#x2019; missing teen was in Northwood area\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/EU2CX347SBDNNAJK33RPTGHG6M.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This has increased each year from \u00a310m in 2020\/21 to over \u00a381m in 2024\/25 &#8211; a jump of 800%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cImmigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is collected by the Home Office as part of the UK visa and immigration application process. As such, the IHS is operated and monitored by the Home Office,\u201d Mr Nesbitt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAll UK administrations then receive a pro-rata share of the income generated, in line with the Barnett formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Nesbitt added that the IHS was impacted by the pandemic due to \u201cimportant exemptions and refunds,\u201d particularly for health and social care workers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">When it was first introduced in 2015, the IHS cost \u00a3200 a year for adults before being increased to the current rate of \u00a31,035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">By 2024, the scheme was estimated to have generated a total of \u00a36.9bn, according to the House of Commons Library. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In November, the Reform Party leader Nigel Farage called for the charge to be increased even further to \u00a32,718 a year, claiming it would raise \u00a35bn for the economy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Lillian Seenoi-Barr from the North West Migrants Forum \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3CKKHOOQJRNQDPSUYV5ATFSYSA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"435\"\/>Lillian Seenoi-Barr from the North West Migrants Forum  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Lilian Seenoi Barr is CEO of the North West Migrants Forum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not see this surcharge as an added burden on families who come here to work and build a future,\u201d she told the Irish News. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe see it as a fair contribution into the healthcare system by those who live and work here. Since 2020, close to \u00a3240m has flowed into the economy through fees attached to the majority of visa applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLast year alone almost \u00a382m was paid directly from the pockets of visa applicants and their dependants to access the healthcare system we often take for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThese are not insignificant figures. They demonstrate that migrants are not only contributing through their labour and skills but are also making substantial financial contributions to public services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She continued: \u201cThe disappointing reality is that these positive contributions are rarely highlighted in public debate. Instead of focusing solely on what migrants may cost, we should also acknowledge what they give back, economically, socially and culturally and recognise the enormous value they bring when given the chance to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/people-think-all-immigrants-are-on-benefits-pakistani-lecturer-in-belfast-challenges-myths-behind-racist-attacks-YTXX7TYWUJBJLCVDNWFZQFGXSY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/people-think-all-immigrants-are-on-benefits-pakistani-lecturer-in-belfast-challenges-myths-behind-racist-attacks-YTXX7TYWUJBJLCVDNWFZQFGXSY\/\">Ulster University academic Dr Luqman Saeed <\/a>from Pakistan also told the Irish News about how his family pays around \u00a34,000 a year to use the NHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Challenging the incorrect assumption that all migrants in Northern Ireland were on benefits, he said: \u201cThat\u2019s what the perception is.
