BBC fans begged for one of \u2018the best crime dramas in years\u2019 to be renewed for season 2\u2014and their demands have been heard.<\/p>\n
Dubbed the \u2018Scouse Sopranos\u2019<\/a>, the eight-part thriller stars Sean Bean as a Liverpool<\/a> drug kingpin whose decision to retire kicks off a battle between Michael (James Nelson-Joyce) and his son Jamie (Jack McMullen).<\/p>\n But, as fans of This City Is Ours<\/a> geared up for what was a thrilling finale tonight, rumours of a second season were confirmed.<\/p>\n Starring Derry Girls actress Saoirse-Monica Jackson<\/a> and Gavin and Stacey\u2019s Laura Aikman<\/a>, fans of the show previously hailed its \u2018brilliant\u2019 acting and \u2018excellent plot twists\u2019.<\/p>\n Now, viewers can rest assured that the saga of the Liverpool-based Phelan family will continue.<\/p>\n Taking to X, @IndeedItsMark said previously: \u2018Absolutely brilliant series. If this is not picked up for a second series then it\u2019s a travesty.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t @DWyattHupton added: \u2018This City is Ours on the BBC is one of the best TV series I\u2019ve seen in years. It\u2019s absolutely outstanding from start to finish. <\/p>\n \u2018If you love crime drama, then this is elite. Do yourself a favour and get on it ASAP.\u2019<\/p>\n @stuartcrfc1939 also wrote: \u2018Just finished this city is ours \u2013 Waow! Unbelievable show! Hopefully a second series! See you soon!\u2019<\/p>\n Sian McWilliams, creative director at Left Bank Pictures and executive producer on This City is Ours, added: \u2018We are so delighted to be diving back into Stephen Butchard\u2019s brilliant underworld of Liverpool crime with our wonderful collaborators at the BBC.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018It\u2019s been a joy to watch audiences fall in love with these fantastically complex characters. After the tumultuous events of the season one finale, the gang rivalries and betrayals have escalated to new levels, new ones have just begun, and there is a lot of unfinished business!\u2019<\/p>\n Speaking to the Liverpool Echo<\/a><\/strong>, Bean also said he wants the show to have a \u2018long future\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018There\u2019s not been anything like it before, and I\u2019m very pleased that I have been a part of it. I want it to have a long future \u2013 everyone involved in it deserves success,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n Writer-creator Butchard offered a slightly different perspective, however, stating that he was commissioned to write eight episodes and \u2018did not call it \u201cSeries 1\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n He added: \u2018This City is Ours\u00a0could never have been, say, a film because I would not have had the chance to develop the characters, and they are all important to me. I don\u2019t sit there saying, \u201cOh this plot will be developed further in series two or three and so on\u201d.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I set out to write a fantastic story from episode one to episode eight \u2013 a tale of real life and real emotions where families are dragged deeper into confrontation.\u2019<\/p>\n The series follows Jamie, who plans to cut Michael out of their gang, however, Michael has problems of his own as he falls in love with Diana Williams (Hannah Onslow) and tries to start a family with her using IVF.<\/p>\n Then, after a shipment bringing cocaine from Colombia goes missing, the separate storylines slowly descend into chaos as the gang realise their drug empire is under attack.<\/p>\n Writing a review on Google, James F Manning said: \u2018This is a brilliant crime drama. James Nelson-Joyce is brilliant as Michael Kavanagh, the right-hand man of Ronnie Phelan who is head of one of the most powerful crime families in Liverpool.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018Saorise-Monica Jackson, after seeing her in comedies, it\u2019s nice to see she can do serious roles as well.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t Fellow fan Simon added: \u2018Wow! Way more to this than I expected and such an exciting edge of your seat watch. Excellent story and plot twists. Acting from all of the cast is top notch. Highly recommended!\u2019<\/p>\n Jacqui Reddey also said: \u2018WOW WOW fantastic acting. Kept me on the edge of my seat,\u00a0 haven\u2019t shouted at the TV in a long time!<\/p>\n \u2018Watched three episodes and had a row with hubby about watching the next one but it was one in the morning.
