It shifts with every royal baby birth and passing. The King&#8217;s second son, <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/prince-harry\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Harry<\/a>, who is no longer a working member of the royal family, is fifth in line, with his kids <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/royalty\/899554\/prince-archie-royal-family-role-princely-status\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Archie<\/a> and <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/lilibet-diana\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess Lilibet<\/a> in sixth and seventh place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6YBNS7M3x-\" data-wc=\"46\">His Majesty&#8217;s disgraced brother <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/prince-andrew\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/a> sits eighth in line to the throne, followed by his firstborn <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/princess-beatrice\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess Beatrice<\/a> and her two daughters, <strong>Sienna Mapelli Mozzi<\/strong> and <strong>Athena Mapelli Mozzi<\/strong>. Princess Eugenie is behind her nieces, with her sons <strong>August<\/strong> <strong data-gid=\"edU1_n7A4A\">Brooksbank\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Ernest Brooksbank<\/strong> after her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"e-8Zo9Sh1O0\" data-wc=\"44\">Eugenie and <strong>Jack Brooksbank<\/strong>&#8216;s third child will enter the line of succession at birth, moving <strong>Prince Edward\u00a0<\/strong>from fifteenth to sixteenth in line. Under that system, younger sons displaced older daughters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"eQ5CWgGt0lzd\" data-wc=\"32\"><strong>Lady Louise Windsor<\/strong> is also lower in the line of succession than her younger brother, <strong>James, Earl of Wessex,\u00a0<\/strong>because the same succession rules were still in place when they were born.<\/p>\n<p id=\"epUxPwKKUQt\" data-wc=\"36\">A government bill, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, ended male-preference primogeniture for those born after October 28, 2011. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 officially went into effect in March 2015, two months before the birth of the Prince and Princess of Wales&#8217; daughter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e-0i5VRdyGl\" data-wc=\"32\">In addition to establishing absolute primogeniture, the act ended the provision that anyone who marries a Roman Catholic is disqualified from the line of succession, so <strong>Prince Michael of Kent\u00a0<\/strong>was reinstated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"emtl1wT2cciw\" data-wc=\"90\">When the changes were approved by the Commonwealth back in 2011, <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/royalty\/2018040947649\/princess-charlotte-history-royal-baby-born\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">then-British Prime Minister David Cameron said<\/a>: &#8220;Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our Queen. The idea that a younger son should become monarch instead of an elder daughter simply because he is a man, or that a future monarch can marry someone of any faith except a Catholic \u2013 this way of thinking is at odds with the modern countries that we have become.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"eCsR5ou61gkA\" data-wc=\"31\">He <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/u-k-drops-anti-catholic-rule-of-succession\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\">continued<\/a>: &#8220;Attitudes have changed fundamentally over the centuries, and some of the outdated rules \u2013 like some of the rules of succession \u2013 just don&#8217;t make sense to us anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>History of the line<\/p>\n<p id=\"eyi7hPelIK\" data-wc=\"21\">The royal family&#8217;s website notes that the &#8220;basis for the succession was determined in the constitutional developments of the seventeenth century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"eocBBXnTDu\" data-wc=\"43\">In 1688, when King James II fled the country, &#8220;Parliament held that he had &#8216;abdicated the government&#8217; and that the throne was vacant.&#8221; The throne wasn&#8217;t offered to James&#8217; young son, but instead to his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e9Blk4bLQ5R\" data-wc=\"59\">&#8220;It therefore came to be established not only that the Sovereign rules through Parliament, but that the succession to the throne can be regulated by Parliament, and that a Sovereign can be deprived of his\/her title through misgovernment,&#8221; per the royal family. &#8220;The Act of Settlement confirmed that it was for Parliament to determine the title to the throne.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"epvIoLEU2Q\" data-wc=\"63\"><a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/royalty\/885818\/how-to-remove-andrew-mountbatten-windsor-from-line-of-succession\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To remove someone from the line<\/a> \u2013 many have called for Andrew to be ousted \u2013 would require an act of Parliament, with the <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/the-commonwealth\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\">Commonwealth realms<\/a> in agreement. Edward VIII&#8217;s 1936 abdication was after all voluntary and he signed the instrument himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-wc=\"31\" id=\"eeZGGhVCLgx\">&#8220;Nobody has ever been forcibly expelled from the British succession.
