Vivianne Miedema<\/a> says she \u201ccan\u2019t wait to tell mum we won the league\u201d as the Manchester City<\/a> forward opened up on the family matter that has been behind her recent absence.<\/p>\n

Miedema has missed City\u2019s last two Women\u2019s Super League<\/a> matches, while her team-mates held up a shirt bearing her name and squad number as they celebrated <\/a>being crowned WSL<\/a> champions on Wednesday night \u2013 following nearest rivals Arsenal\u2019s draw with Brighton.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old revealed on Thursday morning that her mother experiencing \u201cserious complications\u201d after undergoing chemotherapy in her battle against cancer was behind her missing the title run-in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last 2.5 weeks have been really difficult for us as a family,\u201d she said on Instagram. \u201cMy mum had serious complications after her chemo treatment for cancer and has been in the ICU since.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been fighting for her life, and by some miracle, she is still here. Now she\u2019s fighting hard through the small steps of recovery, although there are still many big hurdles ahead.<\/p>\n

Dutch international Miedema, the leading scorer in WSL history, contributed 10 goals in 19 appearances this season as City claimed their first league title since 2016.<\/p>\n

City\u2019s coronation was confirmed after Arsenal, whose defence of their Women\u2019s Champions League title came to an end last week following a semi-final defeat by Lyon<\/a>, dropped points at Brighton.<\/p>\n
