{"id":944340,"date":"2026-05-07T18:21:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T18:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/944340\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T18:21:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T18:21:24","slug":"drone-captures-incredible-10-tonne-whale-rescue-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/944340\/","title":{"rendered":"Drone captures incredible 10-tonne whale rescue in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Whale rescuers in Australia have shared uplifting footage of the moment a young humpback whale swam back to the ocean after becoming stranded on a sandbank.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the initial\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/how-to-help-a-beached-whale-or-dolphin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rescue attempts<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, the 9-metre, 10-tonne whale unfortunately re-stranded on a sandbank late Thursday night prompting the urgent multi-agency rescue operation which commenced Friday morning,\u201d said Sea World Foundation while sharing the footage on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXOYX1gEvDi\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> last month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the footage, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/humpback-whales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humpback whale<\/a>\u00a0can be seen stuck on the sand in the shallow, azure waters with its back poking far above the waterline. Experts have strewn wet sheets over its back to keep it cool and protect it from the sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A drone soaring above (operated by Daryn McKenny from the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans, also known as ORRCA) films the rescuers using special slings so a boat could carefully tow the 10-tonne animal back out to deeper waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2026\/05\/Whale-rescue.jpg\" preload=\"none\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2026\/05\/SWF-Whale-Rescue.-Drone-credit-Daryn-McKenny-ORRCA.mp4\"\/>Rescuers free a 10-tonne humpback whale in Australia. Credit: Sea World Foundation and Daryn McKenny, ORRCA<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over six days, this whale stranded multiple times across the estuary system, turning the rescue into a technically challenging and evolving,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orrca.org.au\/about-orrca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashley Ryan<\/a>, ORRCA President. \u201cIt took an extraordinary level of coordination and expertise from all agencies involved to keep adapting to the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the whale was finally freed.
