{"id":945619,"date":"2026-05-08T07:56:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T07:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/945619\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T07:56:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T07:56:15","slug":"what-went-right-this-week-the-good-news-that-matters-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/945619\/","title":{"rendered":"What went right this week: the good news that matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                    The world \u2018entered the age of electricity\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Fossil fuels are losing their grip on the global energy market as renewables provide a greater share of power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to a global energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a> by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which declared that \u201cthe world has entered the age of electricity\u201d, with many economies now electrifying at pace.<\/p>\n<p>Overall demand for energy continued to rise in 2025, the report found, with a quarter of new demand met by solar \u2013 the first time that a renewable source met the largest share of demand growth.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA also highlighted the growing role of batteries in electricity grids. Battery storage, it said, was the fastest-growing power sector technology in 2025, a trend that\u2019s likely to accelerate.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t all good news, however. Demand for oil, gas and coal also grew in 2025 (by 0.7%, 1% and 0.4% respectively), albeit at a slower rate than in 2024. The rollout of electric cars, sales of which surged by 20%, kept oil demand \u201cin check\u201d, the IEA said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, global energy related emissions still increased by 0.4% last year, when they needed to be rapidly falling.
