{"id":945864,"date":"2026-05-08T10:28:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/945864\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T10:28:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:28:18","slug":"london-local-elections-what-are-the-results-in-wandsworth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/945864\/","title":{"rendered":"London local elections: What are the results in Wandsworth?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/newsletter_we_final_embed_desktop.png\" alt=\"WEST END FINAL\" width=\"158px\" height=\"158px\" class=\"sc-eEbqID ecGikU\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/south-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South London<\/a> borough now finds itself under no overall control, with the Conservatives winning the most seats, but falling just two seats short of an outright majority.<\/p>\n<p>The Tories secured 29 seats on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/wandsworth-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wandsworth Council<\/a>, marking a gain of seven from the 22 they held in 2022, and placing them one seat shy of the 30 required for a majority. Labour now has 28 seats, down seven from the 35 seats it won at the last election.<\/p>\n<p>Independent councillor Malcolm Grimston retained his seat, securing the highest number of votes with 4,081. <\/p>\n<p>Sources said the Conservatives are planning to make an arrangement with Councillor Grimston so that he would support the party on crucial votes over the next term \u2013 including the budget \u2013 while remaining an Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative leader Aled Richards-Jones said he was \u201creally delighted\u201d with the results, which he said would see the Tories \u201ctake back control\u201d of the council.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Wandsworth-Conservatives-leader-Aled-Richards-Jones.jpeg\" width=\"5712\" height=\"4284\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wandsworth Conservatives leader Aled Richards-Jones<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Lillywhite\/LDRS<\/p>\n<p>It was a bitterly disappointing night for Labour and a far cry from 2022, when the party took control of the former Tory stronghold for the first time since 1978 \u2013 ending 44 years of Conservative control.<\/p>\n<p>But the Conservatives still failed to secure a majority in what was once known as Margaret Thatcher\u2019s favourite council, at the forefront of the former Tory leader\u2019s Right to Buy scheme and the privatisation of local services.<\/p>\n<p>Labour had 34 of the council\u2019s 58 seats going into this election after losing a by-election to the Tories in 2024, while the Conservatives had 21 seats after Councillor Mark Justin defected to Reform.<\/p>\n<p>Labour, the Conservatives, Lib Dems and Reform UK each stood 58 candidates in Thursday\u2019s elections in Wandsworth, while The Green Party put forward 53 candidates.
