{"id":946706,"date":"2026-05-08T19:19:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T19:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/946706\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T19:19:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T19:19:30","slug":"great-western-railway-to-be-nationalised-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/946706\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Western Railway to be nationalised this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I\u2019m sure everyone in the West who \u2013 like me \u2013 catches the train will welcome this news&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"File photo of a Great Western Railway train\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_GMP_DCM_110521Hitachi_06JPG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"File photo of a Great Western Railway train\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">File photo of a Great Western Railway train(Image: Greg Martin \/ Cornwall Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The West\u2019s main rail operator, Great Western Railway (GWR), will be nationalised this year, the Government has announced, with the company that runs the trains losing its contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced today that when the Government\u2019s contract with First Group, which owns Great Western Railways, comes to an end on December 13, it won\u2019t be renewed, and the operating company will be brought into public ownership as part of Great British Railways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It will mean most mainline services from Gloucester and Stroud to Somerset, Bristol, Wales, and Wiltshire will be part of Great British Railways, along with commuter lines around Bristol too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The move has been welcomed by the metro mayor for the West of England &#8211; which covers Bristol, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">South Gloucestershire<\/a>, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bath<\/a> and North East Somerset &#8211; who said it would help her plans for new stations around the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Five new stations are set to be built in the West over the coming years: Bristol Brabazon, Charfield, Henbury, Pill, and <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/portishead\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Portishead<\/a>. Bristol Brabazon will open in Autumn 2026, Charfield will open in Spring 2027, Pill and Portishead will open in Winter 2028\/29, while work continues on plans for Henbury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sure everyone in the West who \u2013 like me \u2013 catches the train will welcome this news,\u201d said Metro Mayor Helen Godwin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe need a transport network which works, and putting the trains back under public ownership will put people&#8217;s needs at the heart of Great British Railways.
