Pensions Minister Torsten Bell also said the UK Government is committed to making sure older people can live with the &#8220;dignity and respect they deserve in retirement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">His comments came in a <a aria-label=\"written responseLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2026-02-23\/115031\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">written response<\/a> to Labour MP Euan Stainbank who asked whether the Labour Government plans to extend the income tax exemption to older people with private pensions &#8220;who receive the same income as those who solely receive the maximum State Pension\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Chancellor Rachel reeves announced in November that the <a aria-label=\"Personal AllowanceLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-uprating-retirement-tax-36746864\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Allowance<\/a> will remain frozen at \u00a312,570 until April 2031.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37127867\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-uprating-frozen-payments-37127867\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly half a million State Pensioners missing out on higher payments this year<\/a>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37127221\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-payment-rates-37127221\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New and Basic weekly State Pension payment rates in 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Bell said the State Pension is the \u201cfoundation\u201d of the support available to people in retirement adding that over the course of this Parliament, the yearly amount of the full New State Pension is on track to go up by around \u00a32,100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He continued: &#8220;When it comes to taxes, social security benefits are treated differently depending on why they are paid. Generally, benefits that replace income, like the State Pension, are taxable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHowever, I can confirm that those whose sole income is the basic and full new State Pension, without any increments, will not pay any income tax this tax year or next. Furthermore, the Chancellor has said that those whose only income is the Basic or New State Pension without any increments will not have to pay income tax over this Parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The DWP explained the UK Government will achieve this by \u201ceasing the administrative burden\u201d for pensioners so that they do not have to pay small amounts of tax via Simple Assessment from 2027\/28. More details on this will be announced \u201cin due course\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The full New State Pension is now worth \u00a3241.30 per week, while those on the maximum Basic State Pension will receive \u00a3184.90 every week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It\u2019s important to remember that the amount of State Pension someone receives depends on their National Insurance contributions.
