The \u201cmost dangerous roundabout in Northern Ireland\u201d is set to get long-awaited safety measures, following approval by the local council.<\/p>\n

The Caw roundabout in Derry<\/a> has consistently ranked amongst the worst accident blackspots in Northern Ireland and a new large-scale housing development nearby had prompted fears that the number of collisions could increase.<\/p>\n

Described by the SDLP MLA Mark Durkan as the \u201cmost dangerous roundabout in Northern Ireland\u201d, government statistics appear to validate his claim. <\/p>\n

While the PSNI\u2019s annual road collision statistics provide a breakdown of crashes by district, more highly detailed data using grid co-ordinates to record locations is available at the government-backed Open Data NI website. An Irish News<\/a> analysis of that data shows that there have been at least 126 collisions recorded in or around the busy roundabout during the last five years.<\/p>\n

And a PSNI<\/a> report in 2022 also showed the Caw Roundabout, which connects links three main roads to the Foyle Bridge, had the highest incident rate for collisions in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

A plan to redesign the busy junction with traffic signals, paid for by the developer of the nearby Rosses Gate housing scheme, has been in the works for years. The proposal has now been granted approvals from both Stormont and Derry City and Strabane council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Work is set to begin in the coming weeks and should be completed by November this year.<\/p>\n

Mr Durkan, who has campaigned for safety measures at the roundabout for several years, said: \u201cIt\u2019s absolutely brilliant news that traffic signals, major safety improvements that have been required for so long, have finally got the green light.\u201d<\/p>\n

The developer of the nearby Rosses Gate housing scheme had submitted proposals to upgrade the roundabout – a condition of planning approval for the development – several years ago but delays at Stormont meant they were only given the go-ahead by the Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins last year.<\/p>\n

The upgrade has now also been approved by the planning committee at Derry City and Strabane council, subject to the submission of a new drawing.<\/p>\n

Mr Durkan said: \u201cDFI [the Department for Infrastructure] should have had this work done many, many years ago. This is the most dangerous roundabout in Northern Ireland. There are more collisions here than anywhere else.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s taken now the development across the way at Rosses Gate to be approved. The developer of that project is going to fund the improvements at this roundabout. These are long overdue works.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cObviously, there will be a bit of disruption during that time but we are going to do everything we can to minimise that disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to a query earlier this year from Mr Durkan, the Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said: \u201cThe upgrade and signalisation of Caw Roundabout is a transport mitigation measure arising out of the adjacent H30 Rosses Gate residential development. As a developer led scheme, Southbank Square is responsible for design and construction of the works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in group leader on the council, councillor Christopher Jackson, said: \u201cThis has been a priority for Sinn F\u00e9in and this progress comes on the back of extensive work between our team locally, the minister Liz Kimmins and the developers of Rosses Gate.
