Malcolm Offord said he \u201cabsolutely\u201d backs detention centres in Edinburgh Central, as Reform UK unveiled its new MSPs in Glasgow on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Reform UK announced prior to Thursday\u2019s elections across the UK that it would open migrant detention centres for people awaiting deportation in areas that vote for the Green Party, should it be elected to government.<\/p>\n

The party confirmed last week that the policy would apply in Scotland, where the Scottish Greens won their first ever constituencies in the Scottish Parliament on Friday (MAY 8), picking up\u00a0Edinburgh Central<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Glasgow Southside<\/a>\u00a0from the SNP.<\/p>\n

When asked by Deadline News on Saturday whether he would back detention centres in those constituencies, Offord responded \u201cabsolutely\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI think that\u2019s democracy in action, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve got a disagreement in the UK about some people in favour of these centres and some not, then it\u2019s only democratic they should go to where the voters have voted for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked why Reform wouldn\u2019t build the centres in areas they control, Offord responded: \u201cMy point is, it\u2019s not about me or you.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about where the voters have voted, and if the Green voters have voted in that constituency, that tells you something about their views on the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scottish Greens Lorna Slater, defeated SNP heavyweight Angus Robertson and Scottish Labour to win Edinburgh Central,<\/a> while Holly Bruce won Nicola Sturgeon\u2019s former seat of Glasgow Southside<\/p>\n

Last week, Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer compared Reform\u2019s plans to\u00a0\u201cconcentration camps\u201d<\/a>, which Offord denied.<\/p>\n

Offord said last week: \u201cThe difference is that a camp where you are given humane accommodation, where you are given medical treatment, where you are assessed and looked at humanely. It is a place where you are able to process people who have come here illegally.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a long way from, different from, a concentration camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Offord was elected as an MSP on the West Scotland regional list, and the party are now in equal second place with 17 MSPs.<\/p>\n
