norovirus outbreak | News World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_296377300-2b81.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28300352\" alt=\"Caribbean Princess cruise Rib-cracking vomiting bug rips through Caribbean cruise\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMore than 100 passengers have come down with norovirus on board the Caribbean Princess (Picture: Princess Cruises)<\/p>\n<p>Yet another cruise has been hit by a viral outbreak after more than 100 passengers fell ill with a sickness bug. <\/p>\n<p>The severe vomiting bug has ripped through the Caribbean Princess, which is currently on its way to Puerto Plata in the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/dominican-republic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominican Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 102 passengers and 13 crew have come down with the contagious disease, which can cause violent enough symptoms to crack ribs.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have been informed about the situation onboard the huge vessel, which is carrying 3,116 passengers and 1,131 crew members, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/health\/article-15802745\/Rib-cracking-vomiting-bug-rips-Caribbean-cruise.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/health\/article-15802745\/Rib-cracking-vomiting-bug-rips-Caribbean-cruise.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Sanitation measures have been stepped up on the ship, with testing and isolation in place for passengers and staff who show symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Operator Princess <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/cruise-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cruises<\/a> said all areas of the boat had been sanitised and extensive cleaning would take place as soon as it arrived in Port Canaveral on May 11.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Start your day informed with Metro&#8217;s <strong><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/news-updates\/?signup-source=news-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News Updates<\/a><\/strong> newsletter or get <strong><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/breaking-news?ito=news-article&amp;?signup_source=news-article-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breaking News<\/a> <\/strong>alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n<p>The cruise set off on April 28, and the outbreak was reported to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on May 7. <\/p>\n<p>It said the predominant symptoms reported are diarrhoea and vomiting. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vessel-sanitation\/cruise-ship-outbreaks\/caribbean-princess-may-2026.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vessel-sanitation\/cruise-ship-outbreaks\/caribbean-princess-may-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a> said that the crew on board the ship has reported increased cleaning and disinfection according to their outbreak prevention and response plan, collected samples from affected people for testing and isolated ill passengers and crew.<\/p>\n<p>Metro approached Princess Cruises for a comment. <\/p>\n<p>Around 21 million cases of norovirus are recorded in the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/usa\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n<p>The disease, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, is spread through surfaces, infected food and faeces.<\/p>\n<p>The gastrointestinal virus outbreak is the fourth to hit a US ship this year so far, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as authorities in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/canary-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tenerife<\/a> are preparing to welcome the hantavirus-stricken cruise ship MV Hondius on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_296356349-a614.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28298897\" alt=\"Mandatory Credit: Photo by ANP\/Shutterstock (16867254l) GRANADILLA - Preparations are being made in the port of Granadilla for the arrival of the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak. dock on Sunday (Picture: ANP\/Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>British passengers will be tested and, if negative, will be allowed to board a dedicated repatriation flight, the UKHSA has said.<\/p>\n<p>All 22 Britons will be asked to isolate for 45 days on arrival in the UK and to self-test.<\/p>\n<p>Experts are still studying the virus, with human-to-human transmission thought possible following close contact with infected people.<\/p>\n<p>Nine cases of the potentially deadly virus have been linked so far to the MV Hondius.<\/p>\n<p>This includes two British men, with a further Briton currently isolating in St Helena.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the UKHSA said: \u2018UK <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government<\/a> staff will be on the ground ready to support the British nationals disembarking.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018British passengers and ship crew not displaying any symptoms of\u00a0hantavirus\u00a0will be escorted by UK Government staff to an airport and given free passage back to the UK.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u2018UKHSA is working with partners to ensure the flight operates under strict infection control measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Public <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/health-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> and infectious disease specialists from UKHSA and the NHS will be on board to monitor British nationals whilst on the flight, to ensure that preventative measures are in place and to provide any care in the unlikely event that any passengers become unwell on
