And at the center of it all was <a data-ylk=\"slk:that;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71153386\/king-charles-congress-speech-transcript\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">that<\/a><a data-ylk=\"slk:30-minute speech;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71153386\/king-charles-congress-speech-transcript\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> 30-minute speech<\/a> with no fewer than 12 standing ovations. As the dust settles on <a data-ylk=\"slk:King Charles and Queen Camilla\u2019s whirlwind State Visit to the U.S.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71191645\/king-charles-us-state-visit-recap\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">King Charles and Queen Camilla\u2019s whirlwind State Visit to the U.S.<\/a>, there have been many takes on how it went. Turner, 53, hosted a garden party at his Washington residence after the royal couple touched down in the U.S, and traveled with them to New York and Virginia. He also played a key role in helping shape the narrative of the visit through a <a data-ylk=\"slk:series of media interviews;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/christian-turner-british-ambassador-to-the-us-face-the-nation-transcript-04-26-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">series of media interviews<\/a> beforehand, emphasizing the fact that this was all about the 250th anniversary of Independence and long-term ties despite current political tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the King, because he&#8217;s above politics constitutionally, he&#8217;s head of state, but he&#8217;s not head of government, it allowed him to paint that broader message about the enduring nature of this alliance,\u201d Turner told T&amp;C. \u201cThat deep friendship, I think, between the royal family and the American people. That, as I think he called it, is one of the special ingredients in the transatlantic partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"King Charles III And Queen Camilla State Visit Continues In Washington DC\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_towncountry_108\/adcbaef15d5b9e3bd2d3c3292edb2b53.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>King Charles and President Trump ahead of the State Dinner.Anna Moneymaker &#8211; Getty Images<\/p>\n<p> (Anna Moneymaker &#8211; Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, no-one exemplifies this regard for the British monarchy more than President Trump, who spoke at the White House about his personal ties to the royal family through <a data-ylk=\"slk:his late mother Mary Trump\u2019s affection for Queen Elizabeth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71151255\/trump-mother-king-charles-crush-speech\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">his late mother Mary Trump\u2019s affection for Queen Elizabeth<\/a>. \u201cThat particular relationship between the King and the President, the respect that the President has for the UK, for the royal family, and for Her Majesty, the late Queen, those are those are things which actually are really quite personal,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it was important to those planning the itinerary that there was a strong focus on people to people ties and not just leadership. \u201cWe also wanted to sort of almost have this as a gift between the two peoples, that broader relationship, showing the breadth and the depth,\u201d Turner said, citing the program on Wednesday and Thursday in <a data-ylk=\"slk:New York;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71087063\/king-charles-queen-camilla-new-york-city-state-visit-2026-photos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> and <a data-ylk=\"slk:Virginia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a71087249\/king-charles-queen-camilla-virginia-state-visit-2026-photos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a> during which the royal couple met many members of the public through community organizations or events. \u201cMy feeling is that it\u2019s easy to reduce a relationship such as this, that I sit in the middle of, as being one between Downing Street and the White House or the White House and the Palace. It\u2019s much bigger than that. It was quite extraordinary,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>And on the content of the message, he reflected, \u201cI saw that the speech as a moment for us to transcend politics, yes, but to stand out as a powerful, celebratory, and genuinely bipartisan moment. And that core message, that while we may have our differences we are our strongest when we work together, I think, was incredibly powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner acknowledged the \u201cspecific issues that we rightly agree or don&#8217;t agree on as two governments,\u201d but concluded of the trip, \u201cIt&#8217;s that broader enduring nature of the relationship that I hope we have celebrated and really shone a light on\u2026Their Majesties touched a lot of people and that was quite humbling to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You Might Also Like<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Preparations are said to have taken 40 hours per minute.
