However, he was arguably best known for his stage performances after turning down a number of high-profile big-screen projects.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in 1980, Mr Pennington turned down the male lead in The French Lieutenant&#8217;s Woman, explaining: &#8220;I realised I couldn&#8217;t let Hamlet go.
