This video makes a compelling case that serious shooters are missing something by always being in “photography mode,” and that having a second camera specifically for personal snapshots can fill a gap that even a smartphone can’t.

Coming to you from Roman Fox, this candid video follows Fox through 48 hours in Barcelona with the Ricoh GR IV as his dedicated snapshot camera, and the framing is worth paying attention to. His argument is simple: when you’re shooting with intent, you’re thinking about light, composition, and color. You’re not thinking about making memories. The GR IV isn’t his main camera. It’s not meant to produce portfolio work. It’s a visual journal, something he keeps on him to catch moments he’d otherwise miss because his head is in artistic mode. He shoots raw and still edits the images, because even casual photos should feel like his own work rather than a preset applied by the camera.

Fox also gives his early impressions of the GR IV coming from the GR III and GR IIIx. His take is measured: if you already own a GR III, the upgrade isn’t dramatic. The internal memory is a welcome addition, but Ricoh switched from SD to microSD, which is a step backward for some. The battery is new and supposedly improved, but it also means your existing chargers and spare batteries from the previous generation are now useless. Fox is notably bothered by this, and reasonably so. It creates unnecessary waste and forces you to rebuild an accessory ecosystem you already paid for.

On accessories, Fox runs three with his GR IV: a wrist strap with a locking connector (the included one can slip off), the Ricoh flash for low-light snapshots, and a basic lens cap from Amazon to protect the front element when the camera is in a bag. None of these are essential, but they reflect how Fox actually uses the camera day to day rather than just for video. What’s genuinely useful here is the philosophy behind why he bought it. He’s also clear that you don’t need a GR IV to do this. A cheap point-and-shoot from eBay or your phone works just as well for the purpose. The camera is secondary to the mindset.

Check out the video above for the full rundown, including Fox’s Barcelona shots and his breakdown of how the GR IV’s 28mm focal length serves this style of shooting better than the 40mm GR IIIx.

Choosing a dedicated snapshot camera changes how you shoot, and the Ricoh GR IV is one of the…

[3939
4021,4020,4022,77,16,15
0":"post-951368","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-arts-and-design","8":"tag-arts","9":"tag-arts-and-design","10":"tag-design","11":"tag-entertainment","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
