It is the Severn Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The story behind the snap, taken on May 11, 1966, is as mundane as it is extraordinary &#8211; especially as this was on Dylan\u2019s infamous and so-called at the time \u2018Judas tour\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The photographer behind reveals why the legendary singer looked quite so bleak\u2026 It was the good old-fashioned British <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/weather\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">weather<\/a> grinding him down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was the British weather that made him look so gloomy,\u201d Barry Feinstein said. \u201cIt was a long tour and everyone was just worn out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The picture was also taken shortly after Dylan\u2019s Bristol concert as part of his first world tour, which became known as the \u201cJudas\u201d tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The concert at the Colston Hall was his first date in the UK and was possibly the first time he was heckled for abandoning his folk style to go electric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe bard of nihilism, hope, anti-convention and protest was at the Colston Hall last night\u201d wrote the Bristol Post\u2019s reviewer Helen Reid. \u201cBob Dylan in person, even if you could not hear him clearly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bob Dylan pictured around the time of his Colston Hall show\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/12147836_2011-05-23.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Bob Dylan pictured around the time of his Colston Hall show\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Bob Dylan pictured around the time of his Colston Hall show<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cDuring the first half, the audience patiently listened as he belched his way solo through half a dozen marathons \u2013 in an unbroken chain. Where was the Dylan stage presence we have heard so much about?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe second part of the evening was spent listening to beat music \u201ca la Bob Dylan\u201d \u2013 with the volume turned on full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cTwo guitarists (one was the now legendary Robbie Robertson from The Band) a drummer and an organist accompanied Mr Dylan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe resulting rivalry was wearying and not very enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;At rare intervals the pianist could be heard fighting his battle against the rest of the noise with great ability \u2013 but he was drowned out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Back in 2006 Dylan fan Chris Jame, from <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bedminster<\/a>, who was at the concert, recalled: \u201cWe weren\u2019t prepared for the electric side of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWhen he brought the band on, a few people heckled and a few people walked out, but I thoroughly enjoyed the concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mike Thomas, from Henbury, recalled in 2011 how he&#8217;d been among those to walk out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bob Dylan in 1966, the year he came to Bristol\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/13566831_2017-05-25__mark_Bob__mark_-_mark_Dylan__ma.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Bob Dylan in 1966, the year he came to Bristol\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Bob Dylan in 1966, the year he came to Bristol<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I anticipated the Bristol concert eagerly, buying a good seat in the front row of the gallery,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The first disappointment for me was that there was no programme, the second that he appeared to be rushing through his solo acoustic songs, hardly pausing for the applause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Halfway through the first half someone shouted, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you say something?\u201d to which Dylan paused before whining, \u201cWha\u2019 d\u2019you want me to say?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The thought \u201cyou could try thank you\u201d occurred to many of us, but by then he was headlong into the next song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;In the second half the band shambled on, proceeded to deafen us and then, during the third number, I walked out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;In 1966, we were not that musically ignorant not to know what a good rock band sounded like \u2013 and in truth this one was pretty mediocre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Not only that, they were murdering one of my favourite songs from those early albums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Was I wrong? Could I not see the future? At that moment in time \u2013 no, I couldn\u2019t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was a few nights later, at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, that a gig-goer famously shouted &#8220;Judas!&#8221; at the singer, a jibe especially offensive given Dylan&#8217;s Jewish heritage. Nevertheless the incident &#8211; and the word &#8211; stuck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Dylan opened up on the impact it had on him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;[They] tried to pin the name Judas on me,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Judas, the most hated name in human history! If you think you&#8217;ve been called a bad name, try to work your way out from under that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Yeah, and for what? For playing an electric guitar? As if that is in some kind of way equitable to betraying our Lord and delivering him up to be crucified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But back to the snap.
