Samsung\u2019s Galaxy smartphone owners are used to this. Unclear timelines. Leaked release dates that slip. Little or no official information. This has been a consistent story<\/a> with recent Android upgrades and it\u2019s playing out again with One UI 8.5.<\/p>\n

Galaxy S25 users in Korea finally received<\/a> the new software on May 6<\/a>, which brings a raft of free Galaxy S26 security upgrades to users who have not purchased the latest flagship, but would like their 2025 devices upgraded ASAP.<\/p>\n

Samsung\u2019s global announcement simply said \u201cOne UI 8.5 will begin rolling out in Korea starting May 6, with additional regions to follow,\u201d leading to plenty of speculation as to when other regions might follow. <\/p>\n

There is some hope. As spotted by SammyFans<\/a>, Samsung\u2019s global announcement was mirrored by regional announcements, with some \u201cexplicitly committing to a May 11 rollout date,” even referencing the affected regions.<\/p>\n

One such announcement was published in the United Arab Emirates, telling users:<\/a> \u201cThe company will begin launching the updated interface One UI 8.5 in Korea from May 6, followed by Europe, Hong Kong, India, Latin America, North America, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan on May 11, to be followed by other regions later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samsung lauds One UI 8.5 as the release that will \u201csafeguard more settings than before, adding an extra layer of protection.\u201d The upgrade \u201dgives users clearer control over their security settings.” That includes Theft Protection, Failed Authentication Lock and Identity Check. Essentially, it\u2019s a Galaxy S26 flavored Android upgrade without the price point of buying a new flagship.<\/p>\n

Security has become more of a USP on our phones than ever before, which has powered Apple\u2019s ascension to the smartphone sales throne. Samsung should be king of the hill when it comes to Android security, but Google has stolen that mantle through more timely Android upgrades and security updates.<\/p>\n
