{"id":952637,"date":"2026-05-11T13:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/952637\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:00:14","slug":"evacuated-us-and-french-mv-hondius-passengers-test-positive-for-hantavirus-hantavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/952637\/","title":{"rendered":"Evacuated US and French MV Hondius passengers test positive for hantavirus | Hantavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A French woman and an American national evacuated from the cruise ship at the centre of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/hantavirus\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deadly hantavirus outbreak<\/a> have tested positive for the virus, as the complex operation to repatriate those onboard continued on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The French woman was one of five French passengers who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/10\/hantavirus-cruise-ship-tenerife-evacuate-passengers-mv-hondius\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disembarked from the ship<\/a> in Tenerife on Sunday before being flown to a hospital in Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The French health minister, St\u00e9phanie Rist, said the woman was in a serious condition on Monday. Rist said the woman started to feel very unwell on Sunday night and \u201ctests came back positive\u201d. Rist told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a> Inter radio: \u201cUnfortunately, her symptoms worsened overnight.\u201d She is being treated in a specialised infectious diseases unit of a hospital in Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An American passenger who was flown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/nebraska\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nebraska<\/a> along with 16 others on Sunday evening also tested positive but had no symptoms. The US health department said one American national evacuated from the ship had tested positive for the Andes strain \u2013 the only hantavirus strain that is transmissible between humans \u2013 and another had \u201cmild symptoms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Personnel in full-body protective gear and breathing masks began escorting the travellers from ship to shore in Tenerife in the Canary Islands on Sunday in an effort that was continuing on Monday. More than 100 people of 23 nationalities are to be evacuated in less than 48 hours in an operation described by Spanish authorities as \u201ccomplex\u201d and \u201cunprecedented\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers wearing blue protective suits board a military bus after being evacuated from the MV Hondius. Photograph: Jorge Guerrero\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Spain\u2019s health ministry said on Monday that \u201call possible measures had been adopted from the start in order to cut possible chains of transmission\u201d, adding that passengers underwent a health check and had their temperatures taken when the ship arrived off Tenerife on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It also said the French woman who developed a fever on the evacuation flight had not had a high temperature when she was examined on board the MV Hondius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Three passengers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/may\/09\/how-hantavirus-turned-hondius-dream-cruise-into-tragedy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MV Hondius<\/a> \u2013 a Dutch couple and a German woman \u2013 have died, while others have fallen sick with the rare disease, which usually spreads among rodents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">No vaccines or specific treatments exist for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/07\/where-cruise-ship-hantavirus-from-what-next-canary-islands\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hantavirus<\/a>, which is endemic in Argentina, from where the ship departed in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But health officials have said the risk for global public health is low and played down comparisons with the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rist said 22 more contact cases had been identified among French nationals, including eight people who had travelled on a 25 April flight between Saint Helena and Johannesburg, and 14 more on a flight between Johannesburg and Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Dutch woman who died was on the flight to Johannesburg and later briefly boarded a flight to Amsterdam but was removed before takeoff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Health authorities in several countries have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/11\/hantavirus-outbreak-cruise-ship-cases-quarantine-isolation-passengers-death-rate-spread-risk-explained\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracking passengers<\/a> who had already disembarked from the ship, plus anyone who may have come into contact with them.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2026\/05\/mv_hondius_route_update10may\/giv-32554bsgKdyLaZ4Hi\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map showing timeline of the cruise ship <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The French prime minister, S\u00e9bastien Lecornu, will hold a meeting of medical advisers and ministers this afternoon to follow the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The French government spokesperson, Maud Bregeon, told BFMTV that it was important not to spread a sense of \u201cpanic\u201d. She said: \u201cWe\u2019re following the situation with the greatest vigilance, on the basis that it is a virus that we know, that a 42-day isolation period has been decided and the objective remains the same: protecting the French people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The repatriation operation evacuated 94 people of 19 different nationalities on Sunday, the Spanish health minister, M\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The remaining 22 passengers on board the MV Hondius are scheduled to be evacuated on a Dutch flight to the Netherlands later on Monday. Garc\u00eda said a second plane that was to fly passengers back to Australia would not be coming to Tenerife because of timing problems, and that all the remaining passengers would now be evacuated on the Netherlands flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ship has refuelled and is restocking its supplies before departing for the Netherlands with 32 crew members on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The captain of the MV Hondius has praised the crew and passengers for their behaviour on the ship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve decided to take this time to thank every single guest and crew member on board here, as well as our colleagues back home,\u201d Jan Dobrogowski said in a video message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe past few weeks have been extremely challenging to us all.
