Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday presided over the \u201cmost \u200cscaled-back Victory Day parade in years,\u201d Reuters<\/a> said. Afterward, he told reporters he thought the Ukraine war was \u201ccoming to an end.\u201d President Donald Trump last week said Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to exchange 1,000 war prisoners and pause the fighting<\/a> through Monday to mark the annual celebration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n

Who said what<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s \u201cmarkedly pared down\u201d Victory Day parade \u201cwent forward amid veiled threats from Ukraine,\u201d Radio Free Europe<\/a> said. Zelenskyy \u201cissued a mocking statement\u201d beforehand \u201csaying he was authorizing the Kremlin parade to be held\u201d free from attacks. If Putin\u2019s parade<\/a> was \u201csubdued\u201d because he \u201cfeared a long-range Ukrainian drone strike\u201d in Red Square. This is \u201cone more sign that the tide may be turning against Russia after four long years of death,\u201d The Wall Street Journal<\/a> said in an editorial.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Ukraine offensive \u201chas slowed to a crawl\u201d and its \u201cchallenges on the battlefield complicate the narrative of imminent victory\u201d Putin is \u201cselling\u201d Trump to convince him Kyiv needs to cede land in U.S. peace talks, The New York Times<\/a> said. At its current rate, Moscow would need \u201cmore than three decades to seize full control of the Donbas.\u201d<\/p>\n
