Demands on your time increase, energy levels dip \u2013 and self-care can take a back seat. But could presenter and novelist Clare Balding have cracked it?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Clare, 55, decided to take her health in hand once she hit her 50s, opting for the low-carb diet recommended by the much-loved TV presenter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/uk\/health\/a64981156\/michael-mosley-health-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/uk\/health\/a64981156\/michael-mosley-health-advice\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Dr Michael Mosley\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Michael Mosley<\/a>.  \u2018I\u2019ve worked hard at it and feel better,\u2019 she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/healthandbeauty\/health-and-fitness\/853448\/clare-balding-weight-loss-secret-50s-worked-hard\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/healthandbeauty\/health-and-fitness\/853448\/clare-balding-weight-loss-secret-50s-worked-hard\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Hello!\" data-node-id=\"8.3.0\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Hello!<\/a>. \u2018I got into my 50s and thought, \u201cI\u2019m just going to be fat and happy\u201d, but then a friend talked about a low-carb diet and the late Michael Mosley publicised this form of weight loss, too, and I thought, \u201cI\u2019ll give it one more go \u2013 as I\u2019ve tried so many diets over the years \u2013 and see if it works\u201d. And it did!\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">She combined this with her favourite form of exercise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/uk\/product-reviews\/health-leisure\/g37660886\/best-walking-boots\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/uk\/product-reviews\/health-leisure\/g37660886\/best-walking-boots\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">walking<\/a>, saying that it\u2019s key to \u2018mental as well as my physical wellbeing\u2019. \u2018I\u2019ve known lots of people turn to therapy and found it supportive and positive but I\u2019ve never felt the need, and I think that\u2019s because I walk in nature,\u2019 she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/celebrity\/article\/clare-balding-interview-presenter-favourite-walks-jggqdmbvq\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/celebrity\/article\/clare-balding-interview-presenter-favourite-walks-jggqdmbvq\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The Times\" data-node-id=\"13.3.0\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">The Times<\/a>. \u2018It\u2019s one of the reasons I don\u2019t get stressed and can cope with high pressure and a big workload \u2013 I just walk and everything settles for me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For the past 25 years, Clare has shared her passion for walking on the BBC Radio 4 series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006xrr2\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006xrr2\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ramblings\" data-node-id=\"18.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramblings<\/a>, where she shares inspiring conversations with other walkers in the great outdoors. \u2018Walking has become an integral part of my life and I\u2019ve worked out that I\u2019ve walked more than 3,400 miles \u2013 25 years of 21 programmes a year, each one involving a walk of about six and a half miles,\u2019 she previously said on BBC Radio 4.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And the latest science suggests that Clare\u2019s walking habit could be integral to her weight-loss success.  Recent research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul looked at 14 trials involving 3,758 people from the UK, US, Australia and Japan, and found that people who increased their step count after weight loss were able to keep the pounds off when they stopped their diets. Scientists even pinpointed the exact number of steps that are necessary per day to avoid putting pounds back on \u2013 8,241.
