The 49-year-old Spanish model and actress regularly posts clips of her workouts on her feed \u2013 and right now, there\u2019s one particular method she swears by: the Norwegian 4&#215;4 technique. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018Since last year, I\u2019ve been doing a type of HIIT called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a65830575\/norwegian-4x4-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a65830575\/norwegian-4x4-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Norwegian 4x4 workout\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Norwegian 4&#215;4 workout<\/a> \u2013 four rounds of four minutes, at 85% to 95% of your maximum heart rate \u2013 to maintain my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a71117751\/vo2-max-fitness-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a71117751\/vo2-max-fitness-routine\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"VO2 max\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">VO2 max<\/a> [a metric linked with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and increased longevity],\u2019 she tells Women\u2019s Health UK, adding that, \u2018I have three kids [daughter India Rose, 13, and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, 11, with husband Chris Hemsworth] who keep me active. But I also train pretty hard. VO2 max measures the max amount of oxygen your body can effectively use during exercise. It\u2019s expressed as a number \u2013 the higher, the better \u2013 and reflects how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles work together to use oxygen. See how to do it below, then read on for the one nutrition technique Pataky uses to support her training, and the macro she focuses on.<\/p>\n<p>How to do the Norwegian 4&#215;4 method<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"23.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"23.0.0\">Warm-up: <\/strong>Complete a low-intensity warm-up for 10 minutes. This could be a light jog and dynamic stretches.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"23.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"23.1.0\">Intervals: <\/strong>4 minutes each interval of a cardio exercise of choice, at 85-95% of your maximum heart rate. This could be running, swimming, rowing, cycling or high-intensity bodyweight exercises. If you&#8217;re running, this could be your 5k or 10k pace.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"23.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"23.2.0\">Active recovery: <\/strong>3 minutes rest of low-intensity activity like brisk walking or jogging, taking your heart rate down to 60-70% of your max heart rate.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"23.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"23.3.0\">Repeat: <\/strong>For a total of 4 high-intensity intervals and rests.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"23.4\"><strong data-node-id=\"23.4.0\">Cool down: <\/strong>Bring down your heart rate slowly, then stretch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Elsa Pataky\u2019s nutrition<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Fitness is just one piece of the health puzzle alongside nutrition, sleep, stress management and more. I\u2019ll have dinner with my kids at 6.30pm \u2013 far earlier than the 10pm meals I grew up with in Spain \u2013 and then I eat breakfast around 9am the next day. I\u2019m trying to get more protein \u2013 I\u2019m at an age when you start to lose muscle \u2013 and I have miso soup for my gut health. Living in Australia, there are certain foods I miss. I make Spanish tortilla, but it doesn\u2019t taste the same.
