Conservationists have lowered its <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"UK buyers prepared to pay a premium if home has three key things\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/property\/2039247\/eco-friendly-homes-premium-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainability rating<\/a> in an effort to stem overconsumption, as numbers are &#8220;nearing a breaking point&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) recommended businesses do not source mackerel caught by midwater trawl in the Northeast Atlantic \u2013 which makes up most of what <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Supermarkets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/supermarkets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supermarkets<\/a> and restaurants sell &#8211; downgrading it from a three to a four in its Good Fish Guide. The charity&#8217;s guide uses a one-to-five scale for businesses and a traffic light system for consumers. \u201cIt\u2019s deeply concerning to see a source of seafood that was once a sustainable choice in such decline,&#8221; said Alice Moore, Good Fish Guide manager at the MCS.<\/p>\n<p>Moore added: &#8220;Mackerel is under immense pressure from fishing activities across multiple nations, and the stock will soon be no longer able to sustain itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re witnessing a steady decline in numbers, and they are nearing a breaking point.\u00a0Immediate action must be taken by the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Keir Starmer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/keir-starmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK Government<\/a> to work with other nations to align catch limits with scientific advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mackerel caught in the Northeast Atlantic by hook and line was moved down from a two to a three, and the society took it off the \u201cbest choice\u201d list for consumers two years ago, downgrading it from green to amber rating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The catch limits set by countries have consistently exceeded scientifically recommended levels by between 5 percent and 80 percent since 2009, according to MCS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It added that in the past four years, the total allowable catches were on average 39 percent higher than the scientific advice.<\/p>\n<p>Although the amount of mackerel caught has typically fallen below the catch limits, they have still exceeded recommended levels by an average of 23 percent, or 188,410 tonnes, the charity said.<\/p>\n<p>The conservationists called for countries,\u00a0including the UK, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Norway\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norway<\/a>, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Iceland\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iceland<\/a> and the Faroe Islands, to work together to develop a strategy that leads to the recovery of the mackerel stock.<\/p>\n<p>An <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Rachel Reeves risks &#039;hammer blow&#039; to food security and nature\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2032039\/rachel-reeves-risks-hammer-blow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment Department (Defra)<\/a> spokesperson said: \u201cSustainability is at the heart of our approach to supporting the UK fishing industry and to our international negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already taken action with Norway and the Faroe Islands to reduce fishing pressure on the North East Atlantic mackerel stock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to work closely with the other coastal states, including\u00a0the EU, to reach an arrangement that will ensure the most productive and sustainable management of the stock possible.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"People have been warned against eating one fish due to &#8220;deeply concerning&#8221; overfishing.
