{"id":954044,"date":"2026-05-12T04:13:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T04:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954044\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T04:13:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T04:13:14","slug":"food-waste-bins-prove-no-match-for-cunning-foxes-brighton-and-hove-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954044\/","title":{"rendered":"Food waste bins prove no match for cunning foxes \u2013 Brighton and Hove News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cunning foxes have learnt how to break into food waste bins when they are locked.<\/p>\n<p>A video \u2013 from Philip Wells\u2019s doorbell camera \u2013 caught foxes opening his food waste bin even though it was locked in the upright and also the front position.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wells, of Shaftesbury Road, Brighton, had kept a brick on top of the bin to prevent wildlife from breaking in.<\/p>\n<p>But this was taken by a passer-by one evening before the foxes had their way.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI woke to find bits of peelings and teabags strewn across the path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back over our front door security camera, I was amazed at the cunning of the fox who had learnt how to unlock the food waste caddy so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the lower locking position was no match for the local wildlife\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent future break-ins, he has wedged the orange-topped outdoor bin next to his general waste and added a heavy canister on top.<\/p>\n<p>Animals scavenging in the larger orange-lidded food waste bins has been an issue in the streets near Shaftesbury\u00a0Road, which is home to quite a few urban foxes.<\/p>\n<p>Brighton and Hove City Council said: \u201cWhile our food waste bins are designed to deter animals \u2013 and are largely successful at doing so \u2013 foxes are incredibly intelligent and there will always be some who work out how to gain access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlacing something heavy on the lid or locating the caddy higher up and out of reach are ways to further deter particularly resourceful foxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere there are persistent problems with foxes, these caddies are also small enough to be kept indoors or stored more securely throughout the week prior to the collection day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cunning foxes have learnt how to break into food waste bins when they are locked.
