Even a minor complaint may be sufficient to disrupt the Northern Irishman’s attempt at a second triumph in as many majors this year.

The two-time Masters champion will rank highly among the favourites at Aronimink Golf Club following his second Green Jacket win at Augusta. Yet there’s one surprising face in the field in Philadelphia this week after securing his place at the 11th hour. This year represents the first occasion the PGA Championship has taken place at Aronimink since 1962. McIlroy finished ffth at the same venue when it hosted the 2018 BMW Championship, however, and he’ll hope to finish atop the pile this weekend. Express Sport has outlined the key headlines from the golfing world as focus turns to Pennsylvania for another momentous major.

McIlroy injury doubt

As he pursues a third PGA Championship, McIlroy has addressed questions regarding a suspected injury before departing for Aronimink. Just days before major action resumes in Pennsylvania, the six-time major-winner was seen limping at the Truist Championship.

McIlroy produced a promising final day after recording the ninth-worst round of his career with a four-over-par 75 on Saturday. And despite any worries about his fitness heading to Philadelphia, McIlroy remained composed on the subject.

EXPRESS SPORT ON FB! Get all the best sports news and much more on our Facebook page

“Yeah, I’ve got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot,” he told reporters. “But it’s underneath my nail. So I can’t really get to it or so it’s a little sore, but I’ll be alright.”

A foot blister is far from ideal ahead of any major given golfers typically cover around five miles during an 18-hole round. That amounts to 20 miles on average across a full tournament, which could prove particularly challenging given his desire to practice this week as well.

Fortunately, McIlroy had already visited Aronimink the previous week to familiarise himself with the course layout. Consequently, he revealed he intends to play just nine holes apiece on Tuesday and Wednesday, which should give his blister sufficient time to heal ahead of Thursday’s tee-off.

Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker gets his first PGA Tour win in 8 years. His triumph at the Myrtle Beach Classic was enough to earn him a place in Pennsylvania as he prepares to end a five-year absence from the major circuit.

A bogey on the tournament’s final hole was not enough to derail Snedeker’s charge to victory in South Carolina. He posted two rounds of 67 and a further two of 66 to edge out Mark Hubbard for the title by a single stroke, having birdied four of his last seven holes.

Snedeker’s most recent major outing was at The Open in 2021, where the 45-year-old secured a joint-19th-place finish. The American will lead Team USA at this year’s Presidents Cup and has taken on more of a supporting role recently but will return to centre stage this weekend.

The Myrtle Beach Classic represented the 10th PGA Tour victory of his career and his first win in nearly eight years. Snedeker’s strongest showing at the PGA Championship was a tie for 12th at the 2015 tournament but he’ll be aiming to demonstrate he’s capable of better this weekend.

Joaquin Niemann has addressed speculation of a return to the PGA Tour (Image: Getty) LIV rebel discusses PGA comeback

Joaquin Niemann has spoken about the possibility of rejoining the PGA Tour should his stint with LIV Golf come to an end. The 27-year-old was among the early mutineers who joined the Saudi-funded circuit when it began attracting some of golf’s elite players in 2022.

However, the prospect of a PGA return has been raised following confirmation the Public Investment Fund (PIF) will cease backing LIV beyond this year. Niemann remained guarded in his response when pressed on the matter recently, though he did seem receptive to virtually any outcome.

“Obviously, there was a lot going on with social media and the PIF providing financing help for the league,” said the Chilean on Beyond The Clubhouse. “It was a weird vibe but at the end of the day, we are just players. We have to keep doing what we’re doing by trying to make our team the best we can and playing our best individually.

“A lot is happening but I think it all needs to happen and what is coming will be good. There is a lot going on in the golf world across the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV. It isn’t just about us; everyone is going through things. There is a race regarding prize money on every tour, and I think that might change for everyone.

“I don’t know anything for sure; that’s just me thinking about what could happen. Things are going to happen and I believe they are the ones meant to happen.”

Rory McIlroy is hoping to overcome a niggling blister at the PGA Championship (Image: Jared C.
