{"id":954332,"date":"2026-05-12T07:35:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954332\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T07:35:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:35:17","slug":"i-had-a-chemical-pregnancy-but-my-baby-still-counts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954332\/","title":{"rendered":"I had a chemical pregnancy \u2014 but my baby still counts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295935527-b0ff.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28246362\" alt=\"I wanted a second baby but my chemical pregnancy Meggan Kirkland\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMeggan Grubb and her husband suffered a chemical pregnancy where they miscarried their baby early on (Picture: @meggangrubb)<\/p>\n<p>Stood in her pyjamas, Meggan Grubb, 30, says she was \u2018overcome with happiness\u2019 when she saw a faint positive result appear on her <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/03\/03\/early-can-take-pregnancy-test-7357892\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pregnancy test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Calling her husband, Naill, in the bathroom, the pair hugged as they celebrated their much-longed-for second child, a brother or sister for two-year-old Winnie. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019d been actively trying for a few months, so I tested 11 days post-ovulation,\u2019 Meggan tells <strong>Metro<\/strong>. \u2018It was slightly earlier than my period was due but I was <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/08\/24\/expert-tips-on-what-we-should-be-tracking-in-our-period-diaries-17228476\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tracking my cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I felt like I knew it was going to be positive because I had these strong symptoms and I\u2019m really in tune with what my body is doing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite being so early, Meggan and Niall were excited. They decided to keep the news a secret until they saw their families in person.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I immediately started thinking ahead,\u2019 says Meggan. The family take Halloween pretty seriously in their house, last year dressing up as Mike and Boo, while Winnie was an adorable Sulley. \u2018I thought it would be so cute, because the baby would be born around <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/halloween\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halloween<\/a>.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295935470-68d5-e1778487199373.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28246351\" alt=\"I wanted a second baby but my chemical pregnancy Meggan Kirkland\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMeggan, her husband Niall, and their daughter Winnie, with their three pets (Picture: @meggangrubb)<\/p>\n<p>But despite the positive result, Meggan, an influencer, says she had a \u2018strange\u2019 feeling that she should keep testing. <\/p>\n<p>So, she took another, digital, test the following day. This time, the result read \u2018not pregnant\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Megan rationalised that, as she was so early, her <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/06\/19\/major-change-to-pregnancy-tests-hits-uk-and-ireland-18977444\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hCG levels<\/a> \u2014\u00a0the hormone produced during pregnancy, which are detected in tests\u00a0 \u2014 would likely still be low, so she wasn\u2019t \u2018concerned\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I took another digital test the next day, and this time it was positive. But something inside me was telling me to keep testing,\u2019 she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was doing more line tests for a few days after.<strong>\u2018<\/strong> But with each test, the lines were fading, and so were her symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>The vivid dreams, waves of nausea, a high temperature, and acid reflux all seemed to ease.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was in denial,\u2019 she says. \u2018I was so na\u00efve to what could go wrong.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It was during these few days, that a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/tiktok\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> video popped up on Meggan\u2019s feed, from a young woman who\u2019d had a chemical pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0very early <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/13\/a-miscarriage-no-one-forced-work-2-23612622\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">miscarriage<\/a>, chemical pregnancies usually happen at around five weeks, and can happen for various reasons. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295935468-5e2f-e1778487078186.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28246353\" alt=\"I wanted a second baby but my chemical pregnancy Meggan Kirkland\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMeggan and Niall have been trying to give Winnie a sibling for months (Picture: @meggangrubb)<\/p>\n<p>Some occur because the lining of the womb has not developed correctly, and an embryo cannot embed properly. Others happen because there are chromosomal issues with the embryo, meaning the pregnancy cannot develop.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that 10 to 20% of pregnancies are chemical pregnancies. It\u2019s possible that they can happen without any symptoms, and can go undetected if you don\u2019t miss a period or take a pregnancy test. They don\u2019t require treatment, as long as there is no bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That\u2019s the first time I\u2019d ever heard about chemical pregnancy and how it can happen,\u2019 Meggan explains.<\/p>\n<p>She says coming across the video felt like a \u2018sign\u2019. \u2018A few days later, the line on the pregnancy tests were basically nothing. Then I started to bleed.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tChemical pregnancy: what you need to know\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>You may not realise you\u2019ve had a chemical pregnancy if you do not miss a period or take a pregnancy test. Now home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy hormones before your period is due, you may be more aware of a chemical pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Signs<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A positive pregnancy test, but then a negative one soon after.<\/li>\n<li>Mild cramping.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0bleed\u00a0like a period even after a positive pregnancy test.<\/li>\n<li>Low, or decreasing levels of pregnancy hormone (hCG) on a blood test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treatment<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need treatment for a chemical pregnancy as long as you\u2019ve bled. You can try again for a baby straight away if you want to, but doctors usually recommend waiting until after your next period.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tommys.org\/baby-loss-support\/miscarriage-information-and-support\/types-of-miscarriage\/chemical-pregnancy-information-and-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tommy\u2019s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The young mother says she knew \u2018in her heart\u2019 that she was no longer pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My brain was fighting with me being like, no, it isn\u2019t [happening],\u2019 she adds. \u2018I felt really numb, I couldn\u2019t even get myself off the sofa.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My daughter Winnie is very empathetic and kept checking if I was okay and cuddling me \u2014 it was helpful having her because you have to keep going.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meggan says it took Niall about a week for the news to sink in, before he got emotional and cried.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He didn\u2019t react strongly straight away like I did, I don\u2019t really know exactly what he thought,\u2019 she says. \u2018I think he wasn\u2019t sure if I was right or not, saying: \u201cWhat do you mean it could just go negative?\u201d. He holds his emotions together better than me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He was being the better parent in that time where I felt like I couldn\u2019t,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295935471-6374.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28246348\" alt=\"I wanted a second baby but my chemical pregnancy Meggan Kirkland\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMeggan had never heard of chemical pregnancy before she experienced it herself (Picture: @meggangrubb)<\/p>\n<p>Confused by what had happened, Meggan sought the help of baby loss <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/charity\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charity<\/a>, Tommy\u2019s. She didn\u2019t go to the doctor because she knew there was likely nothing they could do.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was researching what you\u2019re supposed to do, but when it\u2019s early on there\u2019s not really much a GP will do,\u2019 she says. \u2018The internet said within two weeks after it looks like the hCG on the test has gone, you should bleed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought \u201cGod, how long am I going to have to wait to get that closure and confirmation that this is what\u2019s happening?\u201d, so I weirdly felt glad when I bled because that meant I could move on and try again.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Reeling from the loss, Meggan says she struggled with the language used to describe what had happened to her family.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Chemical pregnancy makes it sound like it wasn\u2019t real or a \u201cproper\u201d miscarriage, even though it is,\u2019 she explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018People can downplay earlier losses because you weren\u2019t in it as long, and the baby wasn\u2019t as developed, but a loss is a loss.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meggan also confided in her family around this time. \u2018It was difficult but I wanted them to know what had happened so I could feel their comfort,\u2019 she explains. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I respond well to sharing and talking, so as difficult as it was I kind of had to say, \u201cjust so you know, I was pregnant, now I\u2019m not\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295935475-f24e-e1778487136618.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28246346\" alt=\"I wanted a second baby but my chemical pregnancy Meggan Kirkland\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMeggan is going to continue trying for their second child despite her upsetting experience (Picture: @meggangrubb)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It just made it feel less huge and it made my world feel less small, it lightened it a lot for me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meggan took to <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>\u00a0to share what had happened with her followers too. Many of her supporters are also parents and some also shared their chemical pregnancy experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You feel like something must be wrong with you, but reading about people who went on to\u00a0have babies was so comforting to me,\u2019 she explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So many women said to me they never talked about it when it happened to them, because they thought it didn\u2019t count.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Now, Meggan is still trying to conceive, and is hopeful for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve been in this trying to conceive phase now for a long time and it can feel so lonely, so consuming,\u2019 she adds. \u2018But the more we talk about it, the more well informed we are and can notice the signs of pregnancy loss.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>For other mothers who have had a chemical pregnancy, Meggan doesn\u2019t want them to \u2018blame themselves\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Don\u2019t think there\u2019s something wrong with you or that it\u2019s your fault,\u2019 she insists. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I do realise that not everybody is open, and a lot of people are private, and they don\u2019t want to even tell people in their lives about it, but Tommy\u2019s has amazing
