{"id":954349,"date":"2026-05-12T07:44:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954349\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T07:44:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:44:15","slug":"he-was-once-a-refugee-now-yassin-mohamud-is-bristols-lord-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/954349\/","title":{"rendered":"He was once a refugee \u2013 now Yassin Mohamud is Bristol&#8217;s Lord Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mohamud came to Bristol 20 years ago from Somalia, to join his family who was already living in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he was made to feel welcome, working first as a volunteer then gaining a degree at the University of Plymouth before working in various public sector roles, including for Bristol City Council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;When you come as a refugee to this country and are starting a new life, it&#8217;s not easy.  There are housing issues, work opportunities &#8211; all of it was challenging,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;One opportunity that helped me was immediately when I came here, I had someone who was guiding me.
