However, the SNP lost seats and, despite its victory, came up well short of the numbers required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It has forced the SNP to backtrack and use Scottish Green seats to justify their fresh push to break up Britain, although that has been <a aria-label=\"severely undermined by the fact the hard-left party did not include a referendum in its manifestoLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/news\/politics\/ross-greer-wrecked-john-swinneys-37137998\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">severely undermined by the fact the hard-left party did not include a referendum in its manifesto<\/a>. The news comes as Sir Keir fights for his job, with Scottish MP Zubir Ahmed the latest minister to quit his role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesman for <a aria-label=\"Mr SwinneyLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/all-about\/john-swinney\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Swinney<\/a> insisted that Sir Keir &#8220;agreed to meet next month to discuss a referendum on independence&#8221;. We warned during the election campaign that if Swinney achieved his self-imposed \u2018mandate\u2019 of an SNP majority, Starmer would be likely to surrender to his referendum demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;But for Starmer to entertain talks on the subject when the Nationalists haven\u2019t even met their own target is downright foolish and reckless. Only the Scottish Conservatives can be trusted to stand up for Scotland\u2019s place in the Union.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Number 10 insisted it was Labour policy to oppose another referendum. A spokesman said Sir Keir merely &#8220;committed to meeting to discussed shared issues including the cost of living&#8221;. He added: &#8220;As the PM told the First Minister, the manifesto this government was elected on was unambiguous that \u2018Labour does not support independence or another referendum\u2019. Our position remains unchanged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Swinney&#8217;s spokesman said: &#8220;Given the SNP\u2019s landslide victory and the fact that the people of Scotland have elected more pro-independence MSPs than at any point in the Parliament\u2019s history, the previous refusal of the UK Government to consider Scotland\u2019s right to decide its own future was clearly unsustainable.
