Hungary\u2019s foreign minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3<\/a> has opened up about the effects of Brexit<\/a> on his country, stating that it was \u201cbad news\u201d. Since the UK left the European Union<\/a> in 2020, the foreign minister said debates had become \u201cvery unbalanced\u201d and “not in favour” of Budapest. Mr Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 admitted of Hungary\u2019s longing for the UK while speaking at The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the world\u2019s oldest defence and security think tank, in London this week.<\/p>\n

He spoke on a number of matters, including Budapest\u2019s stance on the war between Russia and Ukraine<\/a>, his country’s clashes with Brussels, and Brexit<\/a>. Mr Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said: \u201cWhatever is good for the British must be decided by the British. So you decided, as you decided. We respected that, but that was bad news to us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe major debates within the European Union<\/a> between the federalists and the sovereigntists became very unbalanced by the UK leaving. The UK was basically the leader of the sovereigntist camp within the European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMembers of that camp think the European Union<\/a> should be a strong integration of strong member states, countering the federalists who think that the European Union<\/a> should be a United States of Europe, a federalistic superstate state run directly by and from Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cSince the UK has left, this debate has become very unbalanced and not in favour of ourselves, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his speech at the RUSI, the foreign minister also spoke on Hungary\u2019s relationship with the US, claiming they are \u201cextremely grateful for President Trump\u201d. Discussing the EU sanctions on Russia<\/a>, enforced following the unlawful invasion of Ukraine<\/a> in 2022, Mr Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 admitted that Hungary could back US sanctions, despite branding the bloc’s as a \u201cfailure\u201d.<\/p>\n

He explained that if Donald Trump<\/a> used them as a tool of punishment for Vladimir Putin<\/a> failing to accept his Ukraine<\/a> ceasefire deal, he would be open to supporting the Western sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur decision in the future will be determined by the circumstances in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This comes after President Trump threatened Russia<\/a> with tariffs and US sanctions last week, if a peace deal is not reached.<\/p>\n

The Hungarian minister also hit out at Brussels this week for its reaction to the US tariffs.
