{"id":956046,"date":"2026-05-13T01:54:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T01:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/956046\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T01:54:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T01:54:19","slug":"south-african-authorities-declare-national-disaster-over-deadly-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/956046\/","title":{"rendered":"South African authorities declare national disaster over deadly flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JOHANNESBURG (AP) \u2014 At least 10 people are dead with many homes destroyed in flooding caused by torrential rains across six provinces in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/search?q=south+africa#nt=navsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Africa<\/a> that have hit informal settlements especially hard.<\/p>\n<p>South African authorities have declared a natural disaster for the flooding, thunderstorms, high winds and even snowfall that have affected parts of the Western Cape, North West, Free State, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces since May 4.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration enables the government to use emergency funds and other resources to respond.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Town was badly affected, and the Western Cape provincial government has ordered the temporary closure of schools and parts of the city\u2019s Table Mountain tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p>Local officials there on Tuesday said at least 26 informal settlements around the city had been affected by flooding, with over 10,000 structures damaged.<\/p>\n<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday expressed \u201cdeep sadness\u201d over the loss of at least 10 lives due to the severe weather as winter in the Southern Hemisphere begins.<\/p>\n<p>He said authorities are \u201cmaking the best use of science to pre-empt some of these events and to respond to the aftermath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts have said severe floods across Southern Africa are intensifying, driven by extreme weather patterns.
