Meanwhile, the more expensive tier PS Plus Extra prioritises a large catalogue of legacy content, while PS Plus Premium is more about cloud streaming and retro games.

Some recent examples of day one games have included Stray and Blue Prince.

But in an interview with The Game Business, Sony’s third-party bigwig Chris Svensson reiterated his employer’s stance on including new games within its subscription.

He said:

“We don’t do very many day one titles. We do them largely for indies, and there’s probably between four and six a year that we focus on.”

For much of the generation, Sony was under intense pressure to follow the Game Pass model, with fans demanding the company include first and third-party games day one.

But after falling short of Microsoft’s lofty subscriber targets, and doubling the price to $30 last year, the conversation has fizzled out.

The Redmond firm recently reduced the price of its subscription, but removed Call of Duty in the process; including it came at a $300 million cost, according to reports.

In the interview, Svensson said that the type of titles included in PS Plus are “curated” by Sony, but he didn’t elaborate on what it actually looks for. He did say, however, that it’s important for devs to be on its radar so it can give their games the requisite exposure.

How do you feel about PS Plus these days?
