{"id":95615,"date":"2025-05-12T15:07:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95615\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T15:07:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:07:10","slug":"agree-to-a-ceasefire-until-midnight-or-face-more-sanctions-germany-tells-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95615\/","title":{"rendered":"Agree to a ceasefire until midnight or face more sanctions, Germany tells Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Germany told Russia to respond to the ceasefire proposal by midnight on Monday or face new sanctions, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said during a briefing earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin warned Moscow that if the Kremlin doesn\u2019t agree to the proposal from Ukraine and its European allies, new, tougher sanctions will be prepared and introduced.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;The clock is ticking \u2014 we still have 12 hours until the end of this day,&#8221; Kornelius reportedly said around midday, adding that Berlin is coordinating with European partners on additional sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend Russian President Vladimir Putin did not respond to the ceasefire plan and instead offered Ukraine to have direct talks in Istanbul on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied that he is ready to travel to Turkey himself to meet Putin. He reiterated Ukraine\u2019s proposal for a complete and unconditional ceasefire starting May 12 before the negotiations. <\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has not responded to Zelenskyy&#8217;s proposal for a face-to-face meeting of the two leaders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No ceasefire on the ground as Turkey prepares Istanbul meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha\u00a0said on Monday that Russia is not respecting the ceasefire on May 12.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with the foreign ministers of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, he referred to Ukraine\u2019s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi&#8217;s report about Moscow forces continuing their attacks on Ukrainian troops and positions on the frontlines.<\/p>\n<p>At least seven people have been injured in Russia&#8217;s drone attacks overnight on Monday, a deadline which Kyiv and its allies put forward in their demand for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Russia and Ukraine to meet &#8220;as soon as possible&#8221; and &#8220;declare a ceasefire&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope that this will happen, and that is what we are working towards,&#8221; he said, adding that he was confident that a &#8220;compromise&#8221; could be found &#8220;in the next few days&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the parties will reach a compromise in the next few days.
