{"id":95623,"date":"2025-05-12T15:11:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95623\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T15:11:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:11:08","slug":"the-eu-is-nastier-than-china-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95623\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU is \u2018nastier than China\u2019 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trump&#8217;s comments mark a significant departure from his warm words about the European Commission&#8217;s president last week, in which he praised Ursula von der Leyen as \u201cfantastic,\u201d adding he hoped that the two would meet soon.<\/p>\n<p>Although Trump has already met with a host of European leaders,\u00a0von der Leyen has yet to nail down her own meeting \u2014 saying last week she\u2019d\u00a0only\u00a0meet the U.S. president if there&#8217;s a \u201cconcrete\u201d trade package that can be negotiated.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels last week dangled a list of potential concessions \u2014 including regulatory easing and joint efforts to curb Chinese overproduction \u2014 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-ready-fresh-100-billion-counterstrike-donald-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened tariffs on \u20ac95 billion<\/a>\u00a0worth of U.S. goods if talks stall. Trump&#8217;s trade hawk Peter Navarro condemned the mooted counteroffensive as provocative.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s heated new remarks come as Washington and Beijing agreed to slash so-called reciprocal tariffs against each other, after talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Chinese officials in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. will cut Trump\u2019s recent tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 percent to 30 percent, while the Chinese side will drop measures from 125 percent to 10 percent.
