{"id":956871,"date":"2026-05-13T10:53:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/956871\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T10:53:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:53:30","slug":"wingardhs-slides-glass-restaurant-under-stockholm-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/956871\/","title":{"rendered":"Wing\u00e5rdhs slides glass restaurant under Stockholm bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swedish studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wingardhs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wing\u00e5rdhs<\/a> has unveiled Slussporten, a glass-fronted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restaurant<\/a> located underneath <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stockholm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stockholm<\/a>&#8216;s Goldbridge that was designed to challenge the idea that &#8220;nothing good happens under a bridge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Slussporten, which is run by Stockholm hospitality brand Nobis, is located under a bridge designed by British studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/foster-partners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foster + Partners<\/a> as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fosterandpartners.com\/projects\/new-slussen-masterplan?trk=public_profile_project-title\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its masterplan<\/a> for the city&#8217;s Slussen area.<\/p>\n<p>Named Slussbron, but known as Guldbron \u2013 the Goldbridge in Swedish \u2013 because of its golden hue, the bridge connects Stockholm&#8217;s Old Town with the hip S\u00f6dermalm area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326129 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x446.jpg\" alt=\"Glass restaurant under bridge\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1238\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Slussporten is located underneath Guldbron in central Stockholm<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wingardhs.se\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wing\u00e5rdhs<\/a> looked to ideas of &#8220;mass and transparency&#8221; when designing Slussporten, a self-supporting glass structure that sits underneath the bridge, overlooking the water.<\/p>\n<p>Architects Gert Wing\u00e5rdh and Maria Normann described the 855-square-metre restaurant as &#8220;a glass room beneath a concrete bridge, structurally independent, solidity and fragility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Its building and infrastructure are independent from Slussbron, but the location was still a dominant factor in the restaurant&#8217;s design.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326130 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x653.jpg\" alt=\"View of Slussporten restauran in sun\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1813\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It was designed as a &#8220;glass room&#8221; by Wing\u00e5rdhs<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bridge dominates \u2014 that was given from the start,&#8221; Wing\u00e5rdh and Normann told Dezeen. &#8220;Our volumes are part of its public space, not a challenge to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The silhouette is the bridge&#8217;s,&#8221; they continued. &#8220;The transparency is ours. You pass these facades on bicycle, by boat, by metro \u2014 always in the shadow of Guldbron.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326131 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x878.jpg\" alt=\"Slussporten roof under bridge\" width=\"2295\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The restaurant is only connected to the bridge at its foundations<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the architects chose to work with glass, creating an open design that faces the Vattentorget square. The studio also hoped to challenge traditional views of bridge underpasses as scary places.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing good happens under a bridge \u2014 darkness, insecurity, no man&#8217;s land,&#8221; the architects said. &#8220;That&#8217;s the assumption we set out to change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To do so, Wing\u00e5rdh and Normann used &#8220;super-transparent glass&#8221; to create &#8220;maximum light, a place to meet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326137 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x602.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Slussporten\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1670\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The interior was designed to have a welcoming feel<\/p>\n<p>The only points of connection between the restaurant and the bridge are at the bridge foundations, where Wing\u00e5rdhs used dark sheet metal to also visually connect the two buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The foundations govern; the building elements that meet them are recessed and clad in black sheet metal, stepping back to create shadow and let the foundations read clearly,&#8221; Wing\u00e5rdh and Normann explained.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nobel-centre-david-chipperfield-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sq-nobel-centre-david-chipperfield-architects_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Nobel Center by David Chipperfield Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> David Chipperfield Architects unveils updated design for Nobel Center in Stockholm\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The upper section of the glass facade has a dark-tinted band, both to create a visual boundary against the bridge and to conceal the roof structure behind it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the space has been divided into three sections \u2013 the Gold Bar, the Food Bar and the Dining Room. Here, interior architects Helena Toresson and Sara Helder aimed to create a &#8220;warm and welcoming&#8221; space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326136 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x596.jpg\" alt=\"Wavy metal bar\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1655\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Slussporten bar has a metal design that resembles water<\/p>\n<p>The designers worked with a variety of different materials for the interior, which also reflects \u2013 sometimes literally \u2013 Slussporten&#8217;s location by the water. Its main bar has a striking, beaten-metal design that resembles the waves outside the door.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bar is clad in a patterned metal with a water-like rhythm: warmth, reflection and gold \u2014 gilded, like Guldbron above, with shifting reflections across the space,&#8221; Toresson and Helder said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326134 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x528.jpg\" alt=\"Chairs and tiled pillars in restaurant\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1464\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Tiled pillars and patterned mosaics decorate the space<\/p>\n<p>It also drew on the graffiti commonly found on and under bridges when creating the restaurant space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Running the full length of the bar and restaurant, the inner wall is clad floor-to-ceiling in Italian glass mosaic \u2013 an abstract collage of enlarged onion motifs,&#8221; the interior architects said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inspired by the graffiti that typically adorns bridge foundations and walls, we ornamented ours with patterned mosaic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326132 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/slussporten-wingardhs-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x377.jpg\" alt=\"Restaurant under bridge\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1046\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The gold-coloured bridge above connects Stockholm&#8217;s Old Town and S\u00f6dermalm<\/p>\n<p>Slussporten also features tile-clad central pillars, while the ceiling was designed to match the colour of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tone of the acoustic plaster ceiling was carefully calibrated to match the hue of the bridge \u2013 seen from Vattentorget, the two read as one surface,&#8221; Toresson and Helder concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The Slussen area is also set to feature a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nobel-centre-david-chipperfield-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Center with a red-brick design by David Chipperfield<\/a>.
