All rights reserved<\/p>\n<p class=\"inews--shorts-card--badge\">politics<\/p>\n<p>Four key takeaways from the King\u2019s Speech<\/p>\n<p>The monarch has outlined changes to <strong>health, education and the justice system<\/strong> on behalf of an embattled Sir Keir Starmer looking to prove he can enact the speed of change being demanded by his MPs.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech at the State Opening of Parliament, King Charles unveiled a legislative programme including the <strong>introduction of digital ID<\/strong>, limits on trial by jury, <strong>measures curbing settled status for migrants <\/strong>and an overhaul of special educational needs teaching. <\/p>\n<p>\nFour big Labour changes\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1Digital ID will be introduced as a way of checking immigration status when people start a job, but will not be mandatory.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>2Special educational needs teaching will be overhauled to give schools more responsibility for deciding how pupils are taught.<\/li>\n<li>3A courts modernisation bill will restrict trial by jury to the most serious cases.<\/li>\n<li>4Gaining settled status in the UK will be made harder for migrants under plans which could provoke a backlash from Labour MPs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nFew surprises as PM battles to stay\n<\/p>\n<p>The King\u2019s Speech is the set piece opportunity for the government of the day to lay out its legislative programme. (Photo: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>How much sleep does a person need?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"position: relative;\">\n<p>Sleep is like\u00a0a shoe: one size doesn\u2019t fit all.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oversleeping on days-off or sustaining your waking day with caffeine\u00a0and other stimulants are signs of tiredness.<\/p>\n<p>Not everybody needs eight hours of sleep; it\u2019s variable, dynamic and individual. And will vary over a lifetime depending on the season. <\/p>\n<p>\nOther things to know\n<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter where you physically nap as long as it feels right and you\u2019re comfortable. In January, the NEC blocked Burnham from running in Gorton and Denton. The current rules state a candidate must receive nominations from 20 per cent of their Labour colleagues in Parliament to be in the running.<\/p>\n<p>\nA summary of necessary steps\n<\/p>\n<p>What is standing in Burnham\u2019s way?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vacant seat<\/li>\n<li>NEC permission<\/li>\n<li>Win election, become an MP<\/li>\n<li>Meet nominations threshold<\/li>\n<li>Win leadership competition, become Labour leader and prime minister<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/inews-theme\/assets\/images\/chevron.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But if <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/streeting-allies-begged-loyalist-mps-starmer-4415028?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wes Streeting triggers a leadership contest on Thursday<\/a>, Starmer faces fighting a battle to cling on to his job with his flagship EU project put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>A second source said the EU would not make any concessions or trade-offs that the UK will need to strike the reset deals it wants with Starmer\u2019s future in question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrussels will not make a move without exploring the intentions of London, whoever resides in No 10,\u201d the EU source said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Hard to see why the EU should engage\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Former UK ambassador to France, Lord Ricketts, this week warned that it was \u201chard to see why the EU should engage on a further drive to get closer to the UK while the UK political landscape remains so unpredictable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A third EU source however insisted that until a contest is triggered Brussels would \u201ckeep working\u201d towards reset deals.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer had been hoping to tie up deals to ease food and drink trade, align carbon taxes which would help UK businesses, and create a UK-EU youth mobility scheme at a second reset summit between the two sides in June or July<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of this, the Prime Minister used the King\u2019s Speech on Wednesday to say his Government was \u201csetting a new direction for Britain at the next EU summit\u201d and \u201cputting Britain at the heart of Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It included a new European Partnership Bill that would allow ministers to fast-track EU rules into law without giving MPs a vote, which the Government has argued is crucial for its plans to align with swathes of Brussels regulation to get access to the European single market, with deals to do so on food and drink and electricity being negotiated currently.<\/p>\n<p>While the bill is set to give Parliament \u201ca say\u201d in the new agreements, critics have warned that the powers laid out in the legislation will allow ministers to bypass a meaningful vote by MPs.<\/p>\n<p>Government sources indicated that ministers were open to discussing different mechanisms to give Parliament a say when the legislation is brought to the Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Food and drink deal would lower shopping bills<\/p>\n<p>The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said a food and drink deal would help lower prices of household goods for shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>William Bain, head of trade policy at the BCC, said: \u201cA permanent deal with the EU can\u2019t come soon enough for UK firms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the talks ahead, ministers must deliver a deal that truly unburdens business and cuts costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers will then reap the benefits in their shopping baskets.
