{"id":95857,"date":"2025-05-12T17:13:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T17:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95857\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T17:13:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T17:13:09","slug":"gene-edited-pig-gets-green-light-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/95857\/","title":{"rendered":"Gene edited pig gets green light in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINNIPEG \u2013 Pork made from gene-edited pigs could soon be on supermarket shelves in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>In early May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that pigs with genes edited for resistance to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, PRRS, can be used in the U.S. food supply.<\/p>\n<p>The technology was developed by a British firm, Genus, an animal genetics company. Its headquarters are in Basingstoke, England and has research labs in Madison, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a data-click=\"gfm-click-tracking\" data-module-id=\"ARTICLE_SNEAK_PEAK\" data-module-name=\"Read Also\" data-module-location=\"Inside Content\" data-page-type=\"Single Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/news\/alberta-sugar-beet-growers-sign-contract-with-processor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>        Read Also<\/p>\n<p>                    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"gfm-article-sneak-peak-component--post-image lazyload\" width=\"125\" height=\"50\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/126262_web1_BJG101015_sweetbeet.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of a pile of sugar beets.\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 125px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 125\/50;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Alberta sugar beet growers sign contract with processor<\/p>\n<p class=\"gfm-article-sneak-peak-component--post-text\">Negotiations between the Alberta Sugar Beet Growers (ASBG) and Rogers Sugar that continued into May have culminated in a successful five-year contract, ensuring continued production from sugar beets grown in southern Alberta. <\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFDA approval is a fantastic achievement for Genus PIC and represents a major step towards U.S. commercialization,\u201d said Jorgen Kokke, Genus chief executive officer. \u201dWe will now continue to pursue regulatory approvals in other international jurisdictions with a focus on key U.S. export markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PIC in Genus PIC stands for Pig Improvement Company.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Genus explained that gene-edited pigs won\u2019t be produced in America until the company receives regulatory approval in key export markets for U.S. pork \u2013 like Canada, Mexico and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Genus) continues to make progress with regulators in these jurisdictions as well as with other international regulators, including China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pigs with resistance to PRRS could be a breakthrough for hog producers in America and around the globe. The disease causes respiratory distress in pigs of all ages and reproductive problems in breeding stock, says Iowa State University.<\/p>\n<p>Research on the economic impact of PRRS, suggests that it causes US $1.2 billion in lost production, annually, for America\u2019s pork industry.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, annual losses have been pegged at $130 million.<\/p>\n<p>To develop a pig with resistance to PRRS, Genus scientists deleted a section of DNA that produces a certain protein. The virus uses that protein to enter and infect the pig.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this small gene edit, the pig is resistant to PRRS, as the virus is unable to enter the cells and replicate,\u201d the National Hog Farmer reported. \u201cLike humans inherit traits from their parents, the pig\u2019s offspring will inherit the PRRS-resistant trait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration decision, saying these gene edits as safe for pigs and for humans who consume the pork, confirms what Genus found in a 2024 paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemoving the SRCR5 domain from the CD163 protein confers resistance to PRRS (virus) and\u2026 resulted in no detected differences in meat composition and no changes in the growth rate, health, and ability to farrow,\u201d says the paper published in Frontiers in Genome Editing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results support the targeted use of gene editing in livestock animals to address significant diseases without adversely impacting the health and well-being of the animals or the food products derived from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/bell-twp.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-293859 lazyload\" style=\"width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"gfm-dialog-embed-description\">Breaking ag news stories and commodities markets snapshots delivered daily right to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WINNIPEG \u2013 Pork made from gene-edited pigs could soon be on supermarket shelves in Canada.
