Work has nearly been completed on the \u00a38.5 million refurbishment of Sutton Cottage Hospital in Sutton Coldfield which is set to full reopen in weeks<\/p>\n

The reopening date for a Birmingham hospital, which has undergone a multi-million-pound refurbishment, has been confirmed – with a promise to focus on one particular age group.<\/p>\n

Work has been taking place on Sutton Cottage Hospital in Sutton Coldfield<\/a> for around 18 months with \u00a38.5 million spent to modernise it and to turn it into a healthcare hub, with a focus on older people.<\/p>\n

The Birmingham<\/a> Road venue, run by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS<\/a> Foundation Trust (BCHC), which sits in the heart of the town, will welcome patients and visitors from June 1.<\/p>\n

It promises to be a ‘one stop’ healthcare hub for over-65s in north Birmingham and a new home for a nearby GP practice.<\/p>\n

The hospital will have \u2018integrated healthcare provided holistically between secondary, community and primary care\u2019.<\/p>\n

This will include healthcare areas such as respiratory, diabetes, dietetics, frailty, musculoskeletal, bladder and bowel services.<\/p>\n

There will be community diagnostics facilities like X-rays to \u2018support integrated care and alternative pathways to acute hospitals\u2019.<\/p>\n

It will have clinic and treatment rooms to \u2018support surge capacity and other ‘seasonal’ demands\u2019 like winter pressures response and vaccinations.<\/p>\n

And it will also include the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector activity \u2018through personalised, non-clinical sessions\u2019.<\/p>\n

A BCHC spokesperson said: \u201cA key benefit of the development is that patients should be able to see more than one specialist in a single visit, delivering a more personalised diagnostic experience and a more holistic preventative approach thanks to signposting to community advice and support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe facility will also deliver increased capacity to see patients, improving access to care and reducing pressure on acute care services and demand for GP appointments as a gateway to primary care.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Sutton Cottage Hospital in Sutton Coldfiled is set to fully reopen imminently, there are still barriers around the building with workers and equipment as the last bits of work are completed<\/p>\n

The hospital will also be the new home of the Vesey GP Practice, moving from the nearby James Preston Health Centre at the opposite end of Duke Street.<\/p>\n

The practice will have seven ground-floor consulting rooms and \u2018extended hours of care, with additional support available in the evenings and at weekends to help reduce the need to attend hospital\u2019.<\/p>\n

Services for children and families previously delivered at Sutton Cottage Hospital will move to a refurbished space vacated by the practice at James Preston Health Centre.<\/p>\n

The hospital began life as a nursing home in 1897 before becoming an eight-bed cottage hospital in 1907 and became part of the NHS in 1948.<\/p>\n

It became outpatients-only in 2013.<\/p>\n

BCHC said the refurbished building interior was designed to offer a \u2018contemporary, accessible environment that is intuitive for visitors to navigate\u2019 and at the same time has created a \u2018more comfortable and efficient working environment\u2019.<\/p>\n

It said: \u201cDesign detail such as traditional cornicing and picture framing retain connections to the building\u2019s history, balancing modernisation with preservation.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepresentatives of a broad range of system partners have taken part in a series of workshops to develop the detail of an innovative model of community healthcare services in the north Birmingham locality, incorporating the new facilities at Sutton Cottage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new facility delivers integrated healthcare provided holistically between secondary, community and primary care with a focus on frailty, and input from a suite of services such as respiratory, diabetes, dietetics, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, bladder and bowel, mental health and dementia support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke Spence, associate director of project design partners Design Buro, said bringing a 19th century building into the 21st century \u2018presented a unique opportunity to create a modern healthcare environment while carefully respecting its historic character\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe design has transformed the facility into a light, welcoming, and patient-centred wellbeing setting, balancing modernisation with preservation, meeting current NHS standards and providing a high-quality environment for patients, visitors and healthcare professionals.”<\/p>\n

BCHC’s chief transformation officer Chris Holt said: \u201cWe are delighted that, after a long period of planning and preparation and 18 months of work on site, the new Royal Sutton Coldfield Cottage Hospital is now set to open for the community.<\/p>\n

“The new facilities truly reflect the national ambition to deliver neighbourhood health services, with care shaped around local need. In Sutton Coldfield, that includes a strong focus on frailty and supporting older adults to live well and independently.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, this is very much a hospital for the whole community. Co\u2011locating with Sutton Coldfield Group Practice creates real opportunities for more joined\u2011up, convenient care and better experiences for patients, and we are excited about what this will offer local people.”<\/p>\n

Sutton Coldfield Group Practice GP partner Dr Roger Gent said: \u201cAs we approach the date of the move of Vesey Practice to the newly-refurbished Cottage Hospital, we are working hard to make the transition as smooth as possible for our patients.<\/p>\n

Sutton Coldfield\u2019s MP, Andrew Mitchell, who had pushed for the repurposing of the site, primarily as a one-stop shop for older people\u2019s healthcare, said: \u201cIt is wonderful to see years of hard work pay off with our newly revamped Sutton Coldfield Cottage Hospital opening its doors to patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has taken a huge effort for us to get to this point, and I would like to pay tribute to the Birmingham Community Healthcare team and their great partnership work with Sutton Group Practice.<\/p>\n
