The celebration formed part of an event for frontline workers to thank them for their service and charitable endeavours, with Brigade staff recognised for both their work in London and internationally.

Among the Brigade staff who attended the prestigious event was Leading Firefighter Steve Ladley. Steve was invited following his incredible rescue when a woman fell from the roof of house – Ladley caught her with one hand while hanging onto a ladder. Steve said: “Firstly, I want to say my thoughts are with the residents who were severely impacted by the fire. There is not a day when I don’t think about how incredibly lucky both they and I were to survive this horrific fire without serious injuries. I have been a firefighter for 20 years and never encountered a life and death situation like this.

“Two residents were forced to flee via the skylight at the top of the house after an e-bike exploded downstairs and the blaze ripped through their home. On arrival one man had fallen to the ground while a woman was hanging from the roof window, two floors up. I pitched a nine-metre ladder, when I got to the top, she was overwhelmed by smoke and slipped down the slate roof tiles. Fortunately, just as she was about to fall over the edge of the roof, I caught her with one hand leaving the ladder at an unsafe angle. Thankfully, my team below stabilised the ladder. I managed to guide the extremely panicked resident to an extension ladder which my colleagues had quickly erected.

“I was genuinely honoured, and somewhat surprised, to be invited to this event. I have made my whole family proud. My children gave me strictest instructions to get a selfie with the King, while this was not possible, I was really pleased I could take my little sister Sarah with me.”

Other guests invited to the Palace included Station Commander Ian Simpson, the Brigade’s UK-ISAR coordinator, who was deployed to Mozambique to help rescue people who were hit by devastating floods at the start of the year. Ian said: “Given the large team of outstanding professionals that were deployed to Mozambique, the odds of being invite to something like this seemed quite remote. This makes the invitation even more special.

“My wife came to the event too. This was an important gesture since it is an acknowledgement not just for the work we do, but a thank you to those who stay behind and support us. This kind of deployment means time away from home – the impact on families is not always visible or recognised.”

Station Officer Lee Newman was deployed to Turkey following the earthquake there in 2023. Lee has been a London firefighter for 29 years and joined the ISAR team after seeing an advert for volunteers. Lee said: “To be recognised by Buckingham Palace for humanitarian work is incredibly humbling. This work always appealed to me. It’s the chance to fly to an international disaster and help the host nation in their time of need. Over the years I have been to Greece twice following the wildfires there. I also helped during the Ebola crisis in 2014.

“Attending this garden party feels like a meaningful acknowledgement of the commitment, professionalism, and personal sacrifice involved in international response work. I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities this work provides.”

Firefighters Leoni Munslow and Katie Holloway also attended. Leoni and Katie campaigned for improved maternity support at the Brigade. Their work has led to significant positive change for both women and parents, providing better provision for both current staff and future employees. Leoni said: “Receiving the invite was a big surprise and it felt special to be invited. I’m proud to have attended with Katie as we’ve worked closely and achieved so much together.”

In addition, Firefighter Steve Moore from Edmonton fire station attended the same event as Leoni. In recent years, Steve has completed several ultra running challenges, raising funds for charity. “I am a bit bemused, and slightly embarrassed, to receive such recognition. It was a wonderful experience. I was thrilled to take my wife Donna and meet Prince William and Princess Kate.”

Each summer the Sovereign honours members of the public for the positive impact they have made on their community. The parties recognise the dedication and contribution of those who serve their communities through volunteering, supporting charitable causes and working for emergency services.

*UK-ISAR is the UK’s Fire and Rescue International Search and Rescue

London firefighters have been honoured for their lifesaving and charity work at Buckingham Palace with the first garden…

[7757
748,393,4884,257,16,15
0":"post-959658","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-london","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
