The volunteer-run initiative in Sheffield is launching monthly sessions, free of charge, to help support those living with Breast Cancer.<\/p>\n
The peer support group is being led by two friends Nicola Harris-Jukes and Rachel Mora-Bannon who have both gone through a diagnosis themselves in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n
Rachel Mora Bannon said: \u201cAlthough we had loads of medical support we felt there was not enough holistic support and some health and wellbeing experiences were missing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got together and decided to do something about it and so with funding from Macmillian, we are running 12 monthly sessions that start on Thursday May 14th.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first session will be held at Baker\u2019s Yard in Kelham with locations changing weekly depending on the type of session.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms Mora-Bannon said the sessions will start with the group meeting each other and it will then develop into exercise, nutrition, mental health and social workshops.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cWe have sessions partnered with Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, who do a lot of cancer exercise sessions and are coming along to talk about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople don\u2019t have to sign up, they can just come along!\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThere will be a variety of sessions set up throughout the year which they hope will complement what else is going on in the city, as until now there hasn\u2019t been a specific primary breast cancer support group in Sheffield.<\/p>\n
Although it is starting out as one session a month, this may change or increase due to popularity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms Mora-Bannon said: \u201cIf we get loads of people we may have to rethink the structure of our sessions but for now we\u2019re just opening up and trying to get all the dates and information out as widely as possible so people can know where we are meeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur socials will be held at Baker\u2019s Yard in Kelham Island and then other sessions will be held at either Weston Park Cancer Charity or at the kind of hosts for the practicals. We do have Blend Kitchen booked too.\u201d<\/p>\n
