already present in many medications and supplements could target dementia before it has a chance to cause major damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arginine could slow dementia-related damage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this research, arginine \u2013 an amino acid <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/22536-l-arginine\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"naturally found\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/22536-l-arginine\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/insights\/2025\/09\/rethinking-alzheimers-tau-protein.html\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"sticky bundles of abnormal protein\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"common form of dementia\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/types-of-dementia\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"noopener\">common form of dementia<\/a> in Amyloid plaques and tau tangles have <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24493463\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"been compared \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24493463\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"noopener\">been compared <\/a>to the \u201ctrigger and bullet\u201d in the development of the condition.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest research, scientists noticed that arginine seemed to stop amyloid plaques from clustering together to create that troublesome buildup during in vitro (cells in glass test tubes or petri dishes) trials. <\/p>\n<p>They then tested whether this worked for fruit flies and mice. After administering carefully-titrated amounts of arginine to the creatures, they noticed that the amino acid both prevented plaque accumulation and reduced the harm caused by that buildup. <\/p>\n<p>Excitingly, as we already use arginine in medications and supplements, we know it can be safe for humans.<\/p>\n<p>Study author Professor Yoshitaka Nagai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"said: \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"noopener\">said: <\/a>\u201cOur study demonstrates that arginine can suppress [amyloid plaque] aggregation both in vitro and in vivo. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes this finding exciting is that arginine is already known to be clinically safe and inexpensive, making it a highly promising candidate for repositioning as a therapeutic option for AD [Alzheimer\u2019s disease].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What might this finding mean? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t mean that any arginine supplement will work as well as the specific, carefully-calculated concentrations the scientists used in these animal trials, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the researchers note. \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"11\" rel=\"noopener\">the researchers note. <\/a>(Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2746847\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"animal trials don\u2019t always map\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2746847\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"12\" rel=\"noopener\">animal trials don\u2019t always map<\/a> onto human health well).<\/p>\n<p>But Professor Nagai said it could open an avenue for looking into the effects of the amino acid on human dementia risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings open up new possibilities for developing arginine-based strategies for neurodegenerative diseases caused by protein misfolding and aggregation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the academic shared\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a05c0eae4b0def65bfc28c8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20251121\/Oral-arginine-reduces-amyloid-buildup-in-Alzheimere28099s-models.aspx\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"noopener\">the academic shared<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven its excellent safety profile and low cost, arginine could be rapidly translated to clinical trials for Alzheimer\u2019s and potentially other related disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Some research suggests that those already genetically predisposed to developing dementia could benefit from fish oil supplements.
