Nick Cave<\/a> and Nicolas Cage are two of the most unmistakeable personalities in their fields. One is an artistic mastermind with striking vampiric<\/a> looks<\/a> who has used his intimate appreciation<\/a> of avant-garde composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen to elevate a popular art form to the realm of greatness\u2014and the other fronts a band called the Bad Seeds<\/a>. Apparently, though, beyond the echo chambers of music blogs and Wicker Man memes, a wider world exists where people struggle to tell them apart. Cave has written<\/a> in the past about such cases of mistaken identity, and, last week, Cage told The Guardian<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a day that goes by where I\u2019m not mistaken for Nick Cave.\u201d In response, Cave shared a new anecdote in his latest dispatch of The Red Hand Files<\/a> concerning the \u201cpersistent and somewhat perplexing confusion surrounding our names.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cave relays a story from a S\u00e3o Paulo bar, where he got chatting to a young, wallowing Brazilian man who introduced himself as Diego. When he asked for Cave\u2019s name, the bartender leaned over and told him, \u201cDude, you\u2019re talking to fucking Nick Cave!\u201d Diego \u201cbecame super-animated,\u201d says Cave, \u201cjumping around on his stool, saying that he loved me, that he was my greatest fan, and so on and so forth.\u201d After some hours of more cheerful chatter, Cave recalls, Diego burst into tears and admitted his wife had kicked me out. She hated him, he said\u2014\u201cbut she fucking loves you.\u201d Cave replied, \u201cReally?\u201d and got the inevitable news. \u201cYeah, Peggy Sue Got Married is her favourite film,\u201d Diego said. \u201cShe\u2019s watched it like a hundred times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such was the young man\u2019s \u201cpitiful mixture of tragedy and wonder\u201d that Cave did not have the heart to tell him he had made a mistake. Continues Cave in the newsletter, \u201cHe asked me about my acting career. I said something like, \u2018I\u2019m just an ordinary person like you. Hollywood is not all it\u2019s cracked up to be. It can be a cruel place. It gets lonely sometimes,\u2019 and so on. After a while, I began to warm to my theme. I told him that making Raising Arizona was the most extraordinary experience and a highpoint in my career, that John Goodman was a fascinating and complex character, and how it was a real privilege to work with the Coen brothers and that they were \u2018masters of their craft\u2019 and all this bullshit. Eventually, Diego decided he should go back home and tell his wife, Ana, that he\u2019d met her favourite actor, and that Nick Cave says he\u2019s not stupid, and that he\u2019s a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cave wriggled out of that by saying he had to be on set early. Instead, he wrote Diego a note: \u201cDear Ana, Diego is not stupid. He\u2019s a good guy. Love, Nic Cage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cave concludes, \u201cDiego hugged and kissed me and stumbled out of the door, waving the note in his hand.\u2026 Anyway, these confusions between me and Mr. Cage happen fairly often. But I don\u2019t mind. I\u2019m a fan. Have you guys seen Mandy? My God.
