Tighter immigration policies, visa restrictions affecting dependents of international students and increased competition from other study destinations have contributed to declining numbers of overseas students. <\/p>\n<p>The King\u2019s College London deal reflects a broader shift underway across global higher education as universities increasingly pursue consolidation, partnerships and greater scale to remain competitive in research and international recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a specialist postgraduate university, Cranfield will benefit from the interdisciplinary breadth and scale of King\u2019s,\u201d the two universities said in an announcement on King\u2019s website. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cKing\u2019s, in turn, will be strengthened by Cranfield\u2019s world-renowned expertise in technology, engineering and management, alongside its deep and longstanding partnerships with industry and government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to some estimates, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/article\/2024\/may\/16\/universities-in-england-risk-closure-with-40-per-cent-facing-budget-deficits-report-office-for-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/article\/2024\/may\/16\/universities-in-england-risk-closure-with-40-per-cent-facing-budget-deficits-report-office-for-students\" aria-label=\"40%\">40%<\/a> of U.K. universities are in a financial crisis and the sector is facing a number of possible<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/uk\/home-news\/university-closure-insolvency-england-ofs-b2974762.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/uk\/home-news\/university-closure-insolvency-england-ofs-b2974762.html\" aria-label=\"insolvencies\"> insolvencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2026, University of Greenwich and University of Kent formally finalized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/statements\/37599\/universities-of-greenwich-and-kent-confirm-new-multi-university-group-to-go-ahead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/statements\/37599\/universities-of-greenwich-and-kent-confirm-new-multi-university-group-to-go-ahead\" aria-label=\"plans\">plans<\/a> to create a new multi-university group. This union was cast as a first-of-its-kind merger structure in the U.K. that would allow both institutions to retain their individual identities under the proposed London and South East University Group umbrella. <\/p>\n<p>Mergers And Closures In the U.S. As The Market Consolidates<\/p>\n<p>University consolidation is also beginning to accelerate in the U.S. as institutions confront demographic decline, rising operating costs, falling international student enrollments and growing financial strain.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, New Jersey\u2019s Kean University <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kean.edu\/jerseycity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.kean.edu\/jerseycity\" aria-label=\"moved forward\">moved forward <\/a>with its merger with New Jersey City University after years of financial instability at NJCU. Under the agreement, the merged institution will be called \u201cKean Jersey City\u201d beginning in July 2026, pending final approval.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Elon University announced <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/charlotte.elon.edu\/elon-queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/charlotte.elon.edu\/elon-queens\/\" aria-label=\"plans\">plans<\/a> to merge with Queens University of Charlotte, a move designed to expand Elon\u2019s presence in Charlotte while stabilizing Queens financially amid mounting pressures facing smaller private universities.<\/p>\n<p>Some schools fail to stay financially afloat in today\u2019s challenging environment.
