{"id":961611,"date":"2026-05-15T13:22:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T13:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/961611\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T13:22:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T13:22:26","slug":"australian-government-rejects-clean-up-deadline-for-antarcticas-wilkes-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/961611\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian government rejects clean-up deadline for Antarctica&#8217;s Wilkes Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian government has officially ruled out cleaning up Antarctica&#8217;s contaminated Wilkes Station before the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The coastal base, which was abandoned in 1969, contains an estimated <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-12\/wilkes-station-in-antarctica-a-toxic-legacy\/106281888\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20 Olympic-sized swimming pools of rubbish and contaminated soil<\/a> \u2014 much of it buried under the ice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-12\/wilkes-station-in-antarctica-a-toxic-legacy\/106281888\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s toxic legacy in Antarctica<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC has been given rare access to an abandoned Australian base in Antarctica that continues to pose a threat to the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The waste includes thousands of rusting fuel barrels, as well as old batteries, tins of food and animal carcasses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many of the station&#8217;s dilapidated buildings are also riddled with asbestos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2024, a French inspection team warned the site posed a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-07-01\/abandoned-antarctica-wilkes-station-concerns-french\/104037416\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;clear risk&#8221; to the environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, a federal parliamentary committee chaired by Labor recommended the government <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-13\/report-calls-for-more-inspections-of-foreign-antarctic-bases\/104926316\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fully remediate Wilkes Station by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fifteen months later, the government has now responded, saying it only agrees &#8220;in part&#8221; to the committee&#8217;s recommendation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The government is committed to protecting the Antarctic environment, including addressing environmental impacts from past activities,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;However, the government notes that 2030 is not a viable time frame for completion of this complex and sensitive remediation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Images of an abandoned station in the icy and snowy Antarctic wilderness.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f3ecdc437cbacbec3d3fc66476ed3772.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It was recommended the Australian government fully remediate Wilkes Station by 2030. (ABC News: Jano Gibson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Planning takes into consideration the unique Antarctic ecosystem, logistical constraints, availability of specialist personnel and long lead times for projects of this nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Over the 2025-26 summer months, the team conducted a range of projects focussed on the marine environment near Wilkes Station, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This consisted of using small boats to launch remotely operated vehicles to collect imagery and data of the coastal environment and obtain sediment samples for chemical and biological analysis,&#8221; the AAD said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Terrestrially, the site was further mapped using drone and handheld LIDAR to record the current state of the station and inform remediation planning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It also said about 21 cubic metres of loose metal, wire and wood waste was removed from the site in the past season, after about 10 cubic metres of surface-level waste was removed the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In coming Antarctic seasons, it said assessments would continue to inform further remediation works.<\/p>\n<p>Government agrees &#8216;in full&#8217; to eight of 13 recommendations<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The recommendation to clean up Wilkes Station by the end of the decade came after the committee held an inquiry into the importance of Antarctica to Australia&#8217;s national interests in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its response, released on Thursday, the government said it agreed &#8220;in full&#8221; to eight of the committee&#8217;s 13 recommendations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Abandoned Wilkes Station in Antarctica 2025-11-25 11:11:00\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a8a3b8a36347b0cde6eaf4975756df51.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Australian government says it agrees to eight of the committee&#8217;s 13 recommendations.
