{"id":962326,"date":"2026-05-15T20:49:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T20:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/962326\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T20:49:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T20:49:20","slug":"khanna-schultz-infuses-hamptons-home-with-quiet-contemplation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/962326\/","title":{"rendered":"Khanna Schultz infuses Hamptons home with &#8220;quiet contemplation&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York studio Khanna Schultz has taken cues from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/japanese-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese architecture<\/a> to create a &#8220;net-positive-energy&#8221; house in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hamptons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamptons<\/a>, New York, which features dark wood cladding and a large rooftop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar array<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The House in Amagansett was designed for a philanthropist who had spent several decades living in Japan and wanted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/holiday-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weekend home<\/a> that &#8220;reflected her life abroad while serving as a peaceful retreat for herself and her family&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The project takes its name from its location in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/amagansett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amagansett<\/a>, an exclusive hamlet in East Hampton, on Long Island in New York state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327328 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"House in Amagansett by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>House in Amagansett is a home in the Hamptons designed by Khanna Schultz<\/p>\n<p>It was built on a landlocked quarter-acre property that formerly held an ageing house in bad condition.<\/p>\n<p>The old building was removed, but the team kept an existing pool and many original plantings, including two mature crape myrtle trees. The trees became a &#8220;focal point&#8221; of the new design.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The house was designed around two existing, majestic crepe myrtle trees whose twisted trunks offer an organic counterpoint to the abstraction and simplicity of the building&#8217;s clean lines,&#8221; said Brooklyn-based studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanna-schultz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khanna Schultz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Black wood house in the Hamptons by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Black-stained wood clads the exterior<\/p>\n<p>The architects conceived a rectilinear, L-shaped house with two levels and a basement. The entrance is on the south, and the preserved crape myrtle trees are found on the east side of the home, where they overlook the pool.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese philosophy of &#8220;gradual revelation&#8221; was embraced while conceiving the house, from the facade treatments to the interior layout.<\/p>\n<p>The dwelling is clad in dark wood \u2013 specifically, black-stained, thermally modified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/spruce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spruce<\/a> \u2013 that was informed by rustic Japanese buildings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327350 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_24-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"House in Amagansett by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Japanese architecture informed the design<\/p>\n<p>The front elevation is mostly opaque, while the home opens up in the areas where it faces the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>The approach to the building features a &#8220;metaphorical moat and bridge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;moat&#8221; is actually a pair of light wells cut into the ground, which bring downlight down to the basement level.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/02\/10\/denizen-works-house-onomichi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/denizen-works-house-onomichi-japan-setonai-islands_dezeen_2364_sq_16-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"House in Onimichi by Denizen Works\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Denizen Works designs Japanese house with &#8220;enigmatic quality&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This moat not only enhances the experience of entering the home, but also allows natural light to filter into the basement spaces, creating a connection between the underground rooms and the outdoor environment,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the home, the design was informed by Japanese domestic life and a commitment to efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design process was one of great precision,&#8221; the team said. &#8220;Every inch of the house was carefully considered, much like the design of a car \u2013\u00a0compact yet efficient, with no space wasted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of House in Amagansett by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Bleached oak lines the floors<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor holds the communal spaces, along with the primary bedroom suite, garage and screened porch. The upper level holds bedrooms, and the basement contains a family room.<\/p>\n<p>Elements like light-filtering screens and bleached-oak flooring provide a sense of calm.<\/p>\n<p>Furnishings include a dining set by George Nakashima Studio, a lounge chair by <a href=\"https:\/\/finnjuhl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finn Juhl<\/a>, and bespoke pieces by Brooklyn craftsman <a href=\"https:\/\/markjupiter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Jupiter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327338 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Garden room at House in Amagansett by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>House in Amagansett produces more energy than it consumes<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each piece is carefully chosen to complement the home&#8217;s serene palette, adding to its atmosphere of quiet contemplation,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>The home also features the client&#8217;s art and ceramics collection, many of which are works she acquired during her time in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The client&#8217;s concern for sustainability informed many of the design decisions. The house is designed to be &#8220;positive energy&#8221;, according to the studio, meaning it produces more energy than it consumes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327344 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/house-in-amagansett-khanna-schultz-hamptons_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of a Hamptons home by Khanna Schultz\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The client&#8217;s artworks feature throughout the home<\/p>\n<p>Power is generated via a 23.25-kWh rooftop solar array, which generates more power than is actually needed for the house.
