{"id":963381,"date":"2026-05-16T08:02:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T08:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/963381\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T08:02:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T08:02:13","slug":"liverpool-carragher-tears-into-signings-with-richard-hughes-in-firing-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/963381\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool: Carragher tears into signings with Richard Hughes in firing line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arne Slot is not the only one picking up serious heat at Anfield, as Jamie Carragher has slammed the transfers of Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool\u2019s season went from bad to worse on Friday night as they were swept aside by Aston Villa, losing 4-2 at Villa Park as the hosts booked their place in next season\u2019s Champions League. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/liverpool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Liverpool<\/strong><\/a> were extremely open in defence and midfield and were always at risk of getting caught on the break, something Slot only made worse by bringing on several attackers.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool have dropped to fifth place, the final Champions League qualification spot. Sixth-placed Bournemouth are four points behind but have a game in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool could still make the Champions League by finishing sixth if Villa win the Europa League, but they do not want to let it go down to chance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/tag\/arne-slot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Slot<\/strong><\/a> appeared to lose Anfield during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea last weekend, and the squad does not appear to be playing for him.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to their latest disappointing result, Carragher said on <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Sports<\/a> that Liverpool got last summer\u2019s transfer window completely wrong, in apparent criticism at Slot\u2019s colleague, Hughes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/opinion-liverpool-prove-carragher-right-watkins-villa-slot-sack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool prove Carragher right as Watkins, Aston Villa put Arne Slot on the brink<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the problem all season, it goes back to the summer recruitment,\u201d the pundit said. \u201cEvery player they brought in was more attacking than the one that left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just looked at the games in pre-season, looked at that first game [vs Bournemouth], and it just felt like end-to-end basketball, and Liverpool weren\u2019t that the season before under Slot, they were a lot more controlled, and it just seems to have been lost this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether that\u2019s down to the manager getting his way on the team a little bit more, the signings that have come in, or the problems Liverpool have had injury-wise as you see today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it just feels like Liverpool never, when you look down at the teamsheet, have enough players who are good enough without the ball, and I actually think that\u2019s the case tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked who has the harder job out of Slot and Hughes\u2019 recruitment team, Carragher replied: \u201cWhenever you get asked that, the answer always is a bit of both. That\u2019s always the answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/liverpool-news-arne-slot-sack-reaction-aston-villa-shambolic-journalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Shambolic\u2019 Arne Slot has \u2018gone bust\u2019 at Liverpool as two journalists urge sack<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis team, the way they\u2019re set up with and without the ball, we\u2019re not talking about a team that are amazing with the ball and score lots of goals but are open at the back, they\u2019re very poor in possession and very poor out of possession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can really hang your hat on with the manager\u2019s team this season, and that\u2019s where the pressure comes from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople from outside of Liverpool are probably looking at Liverpool supporters saying, \u2018you won the league last year, what are you talking about saying maybe he should move on?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s because there\u2019s never been at any stage this season where you\u2019ve felt like you\u2019re looking like a real team.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool must return to Klopp-type transfers \u2013 Carragher<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven for a few weeks, or they\u2019re doing one part of the game really good, but out of possession they need to improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing\u2019s been good for Liverpool this season, so I think there\u2019s a lot of work to do on the training pitch through the manager, but also recruitment-wise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey spent a lot last season, but it\u2019s about getting the right players, not spending the most money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo back to what Liverpool did best under Jurgen Klopp \u2013 it wasn\u2019t about signing superstars, it was about signing the right players for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool spent a huge \u00a3446million last summer to sign Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni.<\/p>\n<p>But Isak, Ekitike, Frimpong and Leoni have all picked up injuries at one stage or another.
