TV presenter Laura Hamilton hits back at the haters, as she opens up on her fantastic travels with children Rocco and Tahlia<\/p>\n

Laura’s kids have definitely inherited their mum’s wanderlust<\/p>\n

As a presenter on A Place In The Sun<\/a>, Laura Hamilton<\/a> is never too far away from her passport. But the busy mum-of-two always makes sure her travel plans slot seamlessly into the lives of her children Rocco, 12, and 11-year-old Tahlia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve travelled with them both since they were three weeks old,\u201d she tells the Mirror<\/a>. \u201cIn the first 11 months of Tahlia\u2019s life, she\u2019d been on 23 flights. Some people say, \u2018How do you do that?\u2019<\/p>\n

“But it\u2019s actually far easier to travel with a baby. I learned very quickly not to take everything with us, and we only ever have hand luggage. You get in and out of the airport quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura has been presenting the hit Channel 4<\/a> show since 2012, and also took part in Dancing On Ice<\/a> in 2011, finishing as runner-up. She\u2019s now in her 14th year of finding couples their dream home abroad and her passion for the job remains.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s everything I love \u2013 people, travel, property,\u201d she says. \u201cYou could say we\u2019re ultimately doing the same thing each week, trying to find a couple a house. But every story is different, as is the way you bounce off people. That\u2019s what keeps it exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside her busy TV schedule, Laura co-parents Rocco and Tahlia<\/a> with her ex, who she separated from in January 2022<\/a>, and though it takes organisation, they make it work brilliantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey spend 50% of the time with me and 50% with their dad,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen it\u2019s my week, they\u2019re my priority and I manage work around them. They travelled with me full-time until they were school age, so that\u2019s their reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family trips aren\u2019t all glitz and glamour, though. \u201cWe have done five-star hotels, but equally, I grew up camping and caravanning \u2013 they\u2019re some of the best holidays I ever had,\u201d says Laura.<\/p>\n

Sadly, she does face criticism over the trips they take. \u201cI\u2019ve had people saying, \u2018It\u2019s so unstable for your children. They don\u2019t know if they\u2019re coming or going. But that\u2019s utter rubbish.<\/p>\n

“Home is wherever family is. If we\u2019re talking about bricks and mortar, the UK is home and it\u2019s where they go to school. But I want them to see as many different places in the world<\/a> as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

She took the children to Nashville, then the Bahamas over Easter<\/p>\n

She also went skiing earlier this year with her old Dancing On Ice partner Colin <\/p>\n

Laura is also keen to stress that her frequent travelling has no bearing on her role as a parent. \u201cPeople on social media can make assumptions I\u2019m not with them<\/a> if I don\u2019t post about them all the time,\u201d she says. \u201cWell, trust me, I\u2019m a very hands-on mum. Just because I don\u2019t post about it all the time doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though her youngsters seem to have inherited her joy at seeing the world, Rocco appears to have his heart set on another career \u2013 professional footballer.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoesn\u2019t every little boy want to be a footballer?\u201d Laura laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s managing those expectations. He\u2019ll say, \u2018Mummy, don\u2019t doubt me,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t dare.\u2019 But for me, it\u2019s always good to have a back-up option. I wanted to do TV and property was my back-up, and I managed to blend the two together.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s clear she encourages her children to make their own choices. She says, \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted them to be independent. Sometimes if you don\u2019t teach them to do it themselves, you end up with a lazy kid that thinks you wait on them hand and foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I don\u2019t expect them to come home from school and do the washing and cook dinner, but they\u2019ve definitely got to the point where they wake up and make their own breakfast. Or Rocco will say, \u2018I\u2019m hungry. I\u2019m going to make myself some lunch.\u2019 I\u2019m not going to be there forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a close-knit family, she says both children \u201cliterally talk to me about anything and everything\u201d. But like any other parent, she does worry about the impact of social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want them on certain apps<\/a>, like Snapchat,\u201d Laura says. \u201cI just don\u2019t like them. I\u2019ll ask Tahlia what she\u2019s looking at and she\u2019s like, \u2018I just look at horses and make-up.\u2019 I check, and it\u2019s true. And Rocco says, \u2018It\u2019s just football. Occasionally I see the odd boob, but you know\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura\u2019s property career began more than 20 years ago, and she has been doing up houses since the age of 19. \u201cI\u2019ve developed flats, detached houses. I\u2019ve turned old homes into eco-homes. I\u2019ve learned along the way and am still learning,\u201d she says. \u201cI just have this passion for turning a rundown wreck into something lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently on the go is a renovation in Mallorca<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved it there. It was the first place I took Tahlia to when she was three weeks old,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

But her heart remains firmly in Britain. \u201cI\u2019m going to make a really big statement here. Where I am now in Surrey is my forever home,\u201d she insists.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can always say nothing\u2019s forever, whether it\u2019s a relationship, property or whatever. But I don\u2019t want to move from here. It\u2019s convenient for school, the airport, and I love the space and privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she recently turned 44, Laura looks amazingly youthful,<\/a> and she\u2019s certainly not concerned about ageing. \u201cI don\u2019t worry about it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can\u2019t do anything about it. It\u2019s a privilege to be getting older. But I do notice, the older I get, the years seem to go faster and faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

She tries avoid too much booze these days though. \u201cFeeling hungover or rubbish the day after doesn\u2019t work for me because I need to be productive every day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids are quite observant now too. If you\u2019re having a glass of wine they\u2019ll go, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re not having too many are you, Mummy?\u2019 I don\u2019t really drink anyway, but they\u2019re both very fit and healthy with sports scholarships at school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overall, Laura is very content with life right now. \u201cI used to worry so much about what other people think. The older I\u2019ve got, I block out the noise and the people saying, \u2018Oh, you shouldn\u2019t be travelling so much. There\u2019s no stability. Where\u2019s home?\u2019 I used to listen to that, but I don\u2019t any more. As long as they\u2019re happy, I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has been developing properties since she was 19<\/p>\n

In fact, she tells us they\u2019ve been more than happy recently. After scrapping a plan to take them to Sri Lanka over the Easter holidays due to the ongoing unrest, she opted for a multi-destination trip to Nashville, Miami and the Bahamas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always been on my bucket list to go to Nashville<\/a>,\u201d she says. \u201cTahlia loves horses and music, I love music, and Rocco loves the States. We went from Nashville to Chattanooga for a rodeo and it was incredible. We sat right at the front, watching the horses go around. At the start, they have little children in cowboy gear riding sheep, and they go out and work the crowd!\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Bahamas<\/a>, they swam with nurse sharks and the island\u2019s famous wild pigs. \u201cThe kids adore wildlife,\u201d Laura says. \u201cRocco loves watching Attenborough. Maybe that\u2019s the secret to a long life, you know \u2013 travel and adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also went skiing in France earlier this year with her former Dancing On Ice partner Colin Ratushniak<\/a>, and it sounds like they had a ball. \u201cWe were doing roll-ups, not with ice-skates on, but ski boots \u2013 equally impressive. It was lovely. We spent the evenings cooking, playing cards and listening to music,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going skiing with Colin in Canada next February. I\u2019ve never been and he\u2019s been saying for ages, \u2018Please, come.\u2019 He\u2019s a commercial pilot now for Air Canada, so he may well be flying me there!\u201d<\/p>\n
