{"id":963515,"date":"2026-05-16T09:26:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T09:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/963515\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T09:26:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T09:26:16","slug":"bristol-still-has-31700-student-accommodation-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/963515\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol &#8216;still has 31,700 student accommodation shortage&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Bristol still has a shortfall of more than 30,000 purpose-built places for students to live &#8211; despite a massive programme of building accommodation blocks across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">That\u2019s the verdict of property agents experts who have highlighted a shortage &#8211; what they describe as \u2018an estimated unmet demand\u2019 &#8211; of more than 31,700 students who cannot access what is known as PBSAs &#8211; purpose-built student accommodation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This week, bosses at commercial real estate firm CBRE said the huge expansion of both the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/university-of-bristol\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">University of Bristol<\/a> and the University of the West of England meant the city was still struggling to find places for them to live, and couldn\u2019t build the PBSAs quickly enough to satisfy the demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">CBRE are marketing a new site in the heart of what is a rapidly-transforming area of Bristol around The Dings in St Philips, where this September the University of Bristol will open a new campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Plans for another student accommodation site, this time housing 494 students in three tall tower blocks, have already been given permission by councillors. There\u2019s also an amendment to the plan that could see up to 518 students live there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/0_BRI_PG_230925university-19.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Prof Evelyn Welch at the site of the University of Bristol's new Temple Quarter campus\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Prof Evelyn Welch at the site of the University of Bristol&#8217;s new Temple Quarter campus(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But now the site is up for sale, and is being marketed by CBRE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s extremely rare to be able to offer such a well-located, consented PBSA opportunity that is immediately ready to commence construction in Bristol,\u201d said Nic Rumble, a senior director at CBRE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe demolition has been completed, the site is remediated, Gateway 2 approved, and even part of the CIL payments have been paid. This is as build-ready as you can get.
