{"id":964319,"date":"2026-05-16T14:13:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T14:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/964319\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T14:13:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T14:13:41","slug":"west-leeds-party-activists-are-the-unsung-election-heroes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/964319\/","title":{"rendered":"West Leeds party activists are the unsung election heroes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>By Jill Stocks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that the dust has settled on the local elections, and re-elected councillors resume their duties, and newly elected councillors find their feet, let\u2019s spare a thought for those unsung heroes of the election campaigns \u2013 the party activists and agents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Across West Leeds the party faithful from all parties give up their time and their energy in the run up to the elections canvassing, leafleting, putting up posters and door knocking, playing a huge role in this country\u2019s democratic process.<\/p>\n<p>But their efforts do not go unnoticed by the elected representatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/katiewhitemp.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie White <\/a>is the MP for Leeds North West and joined party activists on Horsforth Town Street in the run up to last week\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>She told WLD: \u201cWe\u2019re really lucky in the Labour party in Leeds North West, particularly in Horsforth, because we\u2019ve got an array of party activists who go out day in and day out and they are 100% committed to this community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them come from different community organisations and they\u2019re here because they believe in the value of community, they believe in collectivism and they think that working with the Labour party and all other organisations is the right way to keep this community strong and strengthen and evolve it for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9643-900x675.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202682\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Later on that day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuartandrew.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stuart Andrew MP<\/a>, previously MP for the Pudsey and Aireborough constituency before boundary changes before the last general election, was back in his old stomping ground of Horsforth for a visit and joined local candidates Chris Calvert and Della Heptinstall canvassing in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur activists are the backbone of local campaigning,\u201d he said. \u201cThey give up huge amounts of their own time to knock on doors, deliver leaflets, and speak to residents because they genuinely care about their communities and want to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9874.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202699\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever party people support, local democracy depends on volunteers willing to put themselves forward and engage with voters directly, often in all weathers and after a full day\u2019s work. Their commitment and energy deserve real recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d741074a-d4d3-4a3b-a3db-538c496813da-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202685\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Tina Fothergill was part of a group of Green Party volunteers on Horsforth Town Street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9651-900x675.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202700\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think with the Green Party it\u2019s very much a grass roots led organisation. We\u2019ve not got the backing of the other parties with a lot of billionaire funding so we need to have people on the ground talking to people face to face, getting ourself out there so that people actually see us, know who we are, know what we stand for and just making our presence known in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9652-675x900.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202702\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>In Armley Green party members were out in force campaigning in the run up to May 7th.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/att.563GnfwvcL7dI2yCmWERzc6QisenJWfqvtJSdA7sYug-900x753.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202695\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Lou Cunningham is a <a href=\"https:\/\/leeds.greenparty.org.uk\/local-wards\/armley-ward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Party<\/a> councillor for Armley. \u201cRunning a political campaign is more than just the surface photos and media,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind every campaign is a group of people coming together for a common cause \u2013 volunteering their time, efforts and energies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/att.1nL09u4vz-Uq2u9_W1EWSIcQlQ10kuKZ1rFyqVfcMnY-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202687\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Armley we have had members from West Leeds and beyond who have united and given up hours behind the scenes to communicate, coordinate and deliver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so grateful and appreciate every single thing anyone has done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these people started off as strangers and along the way we have also had fun and friendships have been forged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/att.DaKK3LFTS8NtGESKkUJy8hrU5fwp5WQKZjhEpcAdqQc-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202688\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Cllr Kevin Ritchie was re-elected for Bramley and Stanningley last week, a ward he has served for a number of years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur volunteers are highly valued and are an important part of our campaign, getting out our message and connecting with voters. I was truly grateful for the immense support, which included non party members, wishing to support me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ba185246-75f9-4daf-ac3f-a764bef6b739-675x900.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202689\"  \/>Cllr Ritchie with agent Roland Cross<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s always something I take into the role, always remembering the activists and voters who put me in the treasured position to represent them. They will always come first, rather than seeking higher office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the work doesn\u2019t stop after the results are announced. It\u2019s then time to collect up all the stakes and posters that have been put up in the local area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9816-675x900.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202691\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4c182334-6a5c-4e44-8d60-10349b54a303-1-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202696\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Also working away behind the scenes, working long hours in the Civic Hall, are the election staff themselves.
