{"id":964728,"date":"2026-05-16T17:13:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T17:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/964728\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T17:13:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T17:13:34","slug":"bristol-eye-lab-celebrates-40-years-of-giving-the-gift-of-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/964728\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol eye lab celebrates 40 years of giving the &#8216;gift of sight&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">&#8220;We&#8217;re a little lab, but we make a big difference,&#8221; says Bristol Eye Bank Manager David Usherwood.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He is proud of his Filton-based team, which, together with its NHS sister site in Liverpool, processes around 5,000 eyes a year and uses the harvested corneas to improve the sight of at least 10 patients per day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the service run by NHS Blood and Transplant is responsible for collecting eyes from deceased donors and processing the corneas, ready for transplant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The patients waiting to receive these eyes often have very poor vision &#8211; their corneas have gone cloudy and they can&#8217;t really see &#8211; so receiving these corneas can change their lives,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#8220;We&#8217;re a little lab, but we make a big difference,&#8221; says Bristol Eye Bank Manager David Usherwood.
