While Amazon\u2019s got Middle-earth on TV<\/a>, Warner Bros. is working to bring\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/a>\u00a0back to the big screen. We already know two movies are coming, but Peter Jackson and the studio are already looking to dive even further into J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s fantasy world.<\/p>\n

During a recent Deadline<\/a> interview, Jackson was asked how much gas the IP has left in the tank. The filmmaker noted \u201cthe appendices are gonna run dry\u201d sooner or later, and he\u2019d love to focus on Tolkien\u2019s books that would \u201cactually make great movies.\u201d In the past, the biggest obstacle was Tolkien\u2019s son Christopher, who edited 24 volumes of his father\u2019s work and didn\u2019t care for their cinematic versions. But after Christopher\u2019s passing in 2020, the rights for those other books were up for grabs\u2014Jackson specifically mentions both The Silmarillion <\/a>and Unfinished Tales as material he thinks is ripe for film.<\/p>\n

According to him, the younger Tolkiens now running the estate are \u201cmuch more open\u201d to other Lord of the Rings books being adapted. He and the studio are currently in talks with those board members to license rights to \u201csome of the other books,\u201d and it\u2019s something he\u2019s really looking forward to. Jackson candidly said it\u2019d be nice \u201cto get away from the appendices and get something a bit more meatier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson\u2019s comments are hardly surprising, given WB\u2019s moves to dominate the fantasy market with\u00a0Rings\u00a0and a Game of Thrones\u00a0movie<\/a>. The question, as Deadline understandably asks, is whether fans will \u201cgo along with it\u201d as they generally did with the Hobbit\u00a0trilogy. We\u2019ll have to wait for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum<\/a>\u00a0on December 17, 2027, and\u00a0Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past\u00a0sometime later.<\/p>\n
